El Presidente Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 Partagás Cigarettes - Ramón Rodríguez e Hijos S. en C. by Punch Joe Today I take the opportunity t introduce another tobacco related historical building of my city. Located in the opposite corner of the ancient Particulares Factory by Menéndez, García y Cía. (Benjamín y Alonso Menéndez y José García), at El Vedado, where Montecristo and H. Upmann brands were manufactured for some years. This building is listed as the Partagas Cigarette factory but also operated as a warehouse for cut tobacco some times. A humble construction compared to others but equally important since the cigarette industry was a source of considerable profits since the introduction of the first machines, back in 1866. Ramon Rodriguez was commissioned by Cifuentes to put up the cigarette arm of the Industry. The names are engraved in stone at the top of the building. After the Nationalization was abandoned a few years and later was occupied by families while the low floor housed as a Hot Dog Café called Franckfurt in the mid 80’sand still remains working as such. Such a pity.
Maplepie Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 Always a shame to see historical sites like that killed... And knowing how your "representatives" think, the government must've laid down to the hot dogs who decided to buy up and change the building, eh? Well, at least the outside is still visible........ and pretty!
