Inspired by recent discussions, I approach the conclusion of a brilliant specimen of Upmann. One thing I do remember is that the first cigars from this box reminded me of the benefits and necessities of resting older cigars. Fully acclimated to my rainforest of an aristocrat, the depth of the aroma is striking on first light. I have not experienced that feeling in a SW in a while. and it's an immediate pleasure.

While the feeling of the second hand aroma stretches through the years, something about this cigar reminds me of the similarities and the differences in Upmanns through time. The window of 1998-2003 is clear from the finish, the spice of the early 90s is not here. But neither is the potency and tannins of recent production. The dry sweetness of olive and dates, on the other hand, with the side of soft salt is communicating Upmann all the way through.

Yet I can't help but remember the treat just two months ago when an old friend broke a box of H. Upmann flying pigs, Dunhill Selection 222. An extraordinary lesson in Upmann to remind me that someone somewhere can still do it if they want it.

My taste has drifted to Montecristo in recent years, if just for a bit more kick. But the elegance of this particular example and the absence of any odor or side taste reminiscent of something unrelated to Upmann gives me hope that there is something in the brand for me, even if I need to reach back in time.
