I just received a box of Ramon Allones Grandes, RE from Spain, and I noticed on the box it is one of 12,000 produced.

12,000 boxes of 10!?

With cigars like the Diplo RE, La Escepcion and La Flor De Cano only have production runs of between 2000 and 5000 boxes it got me thinking,

How does HSA decide how many of a specific RE to produce?

Is it up to the distributor in that country or do HSA just look at how much tobacco they have and keep making cigars until it all runs out?

I know a lot of people would be seriously enthused at the prospect of 12,000 La Escepcion boxes being available.

I have heard that the distributors have to pay for the releases, and base their numbers on what they figure they can sell, but I have nothing solid to back that up.

More La Escepcion would be nice, then maybe I'd get a box or two! :)

From what I have read the program requires at least 50,000 cigars to be rolled minimum and like Rye said the distributors pay up front. I think that's why you will see 2,000ish boxes of 25 REs or 5,000ish boxes of 10. I'm not sure when the new "pay up front" requirement started.

If you look at this years Asian Re the Grandiosos it was 5,000 boxes of 10 each. In the 25 count box the Belux RE, the Bolivar Poderosos, was a run of 2,000 boxes equaling 50,000 cigars.

I figuered it had something to do with that

But when you look at the RA Grandes (120 000 cigars) or the PL Belicoso Extra (185 000 cigars) it leads me to wonder what makes HSA decide to over produce one line but uner produce another

I wouldn't say HSA are under or over producing. The regional distributor is the one who decides which cigar, the blend, the box size (eg 25ct or 10 ct) and the total amount over the minimum. If they think they can sell more than the minimum 50k cigars, then they may decide to increase the production run.

More than likely, they are starting to keep production runs to the minimum to reduce the chance of overstocks and keep some semblance of exclusivity. I mean, who wants their money tied up in stock for years on end?

Additional comment: REs can also be re-issued once.

Wonderful take^^^^^^^^

Also, the distributors explore what the local clientele likes - look at the Phoenicia releases - RA is much liked by locals in Lebanon and the production numbers reflect that. OTOH, Por Larranaga/Diplomaticos were not brands known to the Spaniards, so the production numbers are lower.

Hopefully the German Distributor realizes how popular a Ramon Allones 898 is gonna be and orders a lot of boxes

If they bring out 2000 boxes I reckon they'll be sold out inside of 12 months

That would be ideal, from a distributor's perspective. lol3.gif

True

But If the vibe I'm getting from people is true (and the price point is decent), they could make almost 5,000 boxes and they'd still sell out within a fairly short amount of time

A good friend of mine has said on numerous occations

"if its anywhere as good as the originals, and doesnt cost $600 a box, I'll be buying atleast 10 boxes"

I have to agree with him.

I've already started saving...
