Natedog Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 Last night I smoked my first aged cigar. It was a Paul Garmirian Gourmet Series ll robusto. Cigars were rolled in 1999 from aged tabacco. The smoothness, aged tobacco flavor, aroma and draw were incredible. BUT... the wrapper was almost immediately unravelling. I was able to smoke the cigar to just above the band. I did not over cut I barely cut enough to just remove the cap but it started unravelling from about 1 inch down from the head and also near the foot. The cigar did not appear to be dry and the b&m that I purchased it from does a good job storing their cigars. Do I need to really baby aged cigars, is this common with a 14 plus year cigar. Let me know what you think. Thanks Natedog
Lotusguy Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 Not common at all - I smoked 80+ year old cigars that held together perfectly.
nikesupremedunk Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 Maybe it was stored too dry/wet at one point. Either that or it was just a badly rolled cigar from the start. I have some cigars from the 80's and a few of them do look fragile but very smokable. I have sticks from late 90's and they look as good as my cigars from the last few years.
Charltonc Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 I have had great cigars from the 90s and a few from the 80s. FYI, when I worked at a cigar store in the states I use to smoke pg gourmet iis all the time, some from 94, 95, and 99 they were always in great conditions. PG is one of the few ncs I still smoke.
PaulP Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 PG is manufactured at Davidoff so it probably is not a construction issue. I would guess that it was not properly stored.
dvickery Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 one thing I do with older smokes ... especially if the wrappers are thin ... is lick the cap a few times and give it time(5 or 10 minutes)to regain some suppleness before cutting . before I started doing this ... often the wrapper would simply shatter during cutting and then just go downhill from there after lighting . seems simple but I hope this helps a bit derrek
