Copper River King Salmon Has Arrived in Seattle

Just heard from a friend that the first copper river salmon just arrived at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport about an hour and half ago, so it will soon be available soon in stores. It brings up another topic, is copper river king salmon worth $40-50.00 a pound??

No it's not worth it. There are a lot of local fish houses in the Seattle area that sell smoked King Salmon for <$20 a pound. And you can get fresh Wild King Salmon for $9.99 a pound.

^+1, my favorite is the Columbia river springers, aka spring chinook, the fish taste better and has more oil than the copper river salmon. If you get a chance, try columbia river spring chinook, hands down best tasting salmon and usually available the end of May in the Seattle area.

Something about a pilot and then half the chefs in a country parading a salmon around an airport just seems to violate a few food safety rules for me.. surely that particular salmon became $50lb of landfill?

For about 5-6 year I maae an annual trek up to the Queen Charlotte Islands to fish for big Springs. Always a great time and would come back with a load of salmon as well as Halibut, Ling Cod and others.

Sea-Tac? Who in the hell gets salmon that's flown into Sea-Tac? The best salmon comes into the terminals directly. I got my Copper River salmon last year from the market at the Fishermen's Terminal in Magnolia (Seattle) and, while I don't recall the exact price, it certainly wasn't $40-50 per pound. They don't list it right now.. but give them a day or two and they will have it, too. They'll ship it darned near the same day it comes it. I grew up in Seattle (Ballard neighborhood) and always got my salmon from them. Since moving to North Dakota 13 years ago this is still my source of great salmon. Arrives next day and looks as good as the day it was caught.

Here's a pic of some tasty goodness that I got from them last year. 12 lbs of Alaskan King salmon, 7 lbs of Copper River Sockeye salmon, 15bs of Alaskan halibut, and (not shown) 1 lb of monster prawns. They were all happy and swimming a few days before they arrived. Now they've been eaten.

Most, if not all of the copper river fish is flown into Sea-Tac on Alaska Airlines planes and then sent out to all the fish houses, restaurants, and supermarkets. The only exception to this is when the fish is brought directly from Alaska by the fishing boats into Ballard where most of the commercial fishing companies dock their boats or have service work performed. Just saw on the news that the current price for copper river sockeyes is $29.99 a pound at the Met Market.. I live about ten minutes north of Ballard "Free Ballard" and have several friends in the fishing industry, which is a nice problem to have.
