polarbear Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 I was lucky enough to tour the Peterson factory while I was in Dublin I just knocked on the door and asked what time they ran tours. The workshop forman took us through the whole process from grading the raw briar bowls after they're delivered from Italy right up to machining and stamping thw sterling silver collars on the more expensive models. Great way to spend a day
Justmi Posted May 12, 2013 Author Posted May 12, 2013 mazolaman and polarbear, thanks for sharing. I have been geeking out this past week over processing pipe tobacco and pipes. As far as I understand it, air-curing cigar tobacco in barns creates a low suger / high nicotine leaf where as pipe tobacco is processed to be high in sugar and lower in nicotine.
mk05 Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 I don't really do pipes, although it's economical, I guess. The old man who runs the B&M here gave me a pipe once and a pinch of something from Louisiana. Well, I thought I was going to pass out. It was like someone gave a a pound of cocaine and I just felt like I was going to melt away. He thought it was pretty funny, I should have known that he was up to his usual tricks...he told me LG Chiseltips were a good morning cigar too...that bastard
Warren Posted May 13, 2013 Posted May 13, 2013 I have a collection of pipes, mostly brier but some meerschaum as well. Pipes are more work and I enjoy them occasionally but cigars are definitely easier.. The other thing I have found with pipes is that wonderful aroma that comes with a good pipe is often enjoyed more by the other people in the room than by you, the smoker. I don't know why but that's what I find. I have a few Petersons and enjoy these the best. I like the bents because of the way they sit in your hand and also because I find they a less prone to allowing that goop to get into your mouth to spoil your day. Something else you don.t get with cigars.
