stargazer14 Posted April 28, 2013 Posted April 28, 2013 Some friends were celebrating the sale of their house and having a last cigar evening in the sunroom that is just perfect for that kind of gathering. Hopefully the new house will have an area just as nice to smoke indoors, but its hard to beat. I thought since the focus of the evening was to enjoy cigars I would break out one of my 520's to smoke young, will compare it to others 5 or 10 years from now. But, seeing how this one smoked, I think I may smoke the first 5 in the next few years - wow. In addition to a fine cigar I was treated to a bottle of Caol Ila Single Malt Scotch, distilled in 1975 and aged 21 years.. This bottle was brought by a guy who said a friend gave it to him long ago and it was just gathering dust so he brought it to the herf. There were only 3 of us sipping the almost full bottle (now on my mantle with about 4oz. left in it) I am not a scotch or whiskey drinker, I will say that up front, was never my thing after a bad whiskey experience as a late teenager, BUT, this stuff was amazing. So smooth and paired with the Monticristo so well I just kept saying -"wow'. I may have found a new love for scotch (I have been a big rum drinker for a long time) Just wanted to share my evening, if I was to rate the cigar it would be a 92 on its way to better things, and how can I rate a drink I really never touch? Aww hell, I give it a 96.
mazolaman Posted April 28, 2013 Posted April 28, 2013 A great evening..pleased to hear of it, nice combinations!
laficion Posted April 28, 2013 Posted April 28, 2013 Nice way to end a day, life is indeed great , congratulations are in demand!!!!!
aes8 Posted April 29, 2013 Posted April 29, 2013 If you like this dram make sure you try Lagavulin 16. It's also a lightly peated single malt. Costco will put this on sale a few times a year for $55
winelover Posted April 29, 2013 Posted April 29, 2013 Cask strength caoli ila from yesteryear coupled with a cuban monte delight sounds like a match made in heaven. Caoli Ila is one of my favourite Islay whiskies as I just kovw the still signature. It may not be the peatiest but that's not the point. Happy days and thanks for sharing.

stargazer14 Posted April 29, 2013 Author Posted April 29, 2013 We had a few other scotch's there that evening and I tried another that was certainly much 'peatier'. After that taste I could not detect peat in the Caoli Ila. The evening did have me tasting the nuances of good scotch for the first time. Enjoyable. Now I get it.
