polarbear Posted April 16, 2013 Posted April 16, 2013 Having watched a number of the FoH reviews (great work Rob, Ken, Smithy BTW) I often hear them say that this Partagas (for example) doesnt taste like a Partagas. I havent smoked one Cuban brand consistantly for a number of years and am curious to hear what the genral thoughts on each Brands "Trademark Flavours" are. I know Cohibas have a Grassyness, Ramon Allones have a Dried Fruit character and HDM have a Sweet Creamyness but what about the rest? I had a Partagas Serie P no2 last night (my first in quite a while) and got a wonderful Salted Caramel flavour for majority of the cigar. Just curious is this is a common flavour from the Partagas line. I have 4 more PSP2's and 10 PSD4's to compare it too but am still curious to hear the more "experenced pallets" out there
nikesupremedunk Posted April 16, 2013 Posted April 16, 2013 Salted Caramel definitely doesn't sound like a Partagas. While I've never had a PSP2, I've heard others say they don't really taste like Partagas. I don't have a lot of experience with Partys either, but I suggest buying a box of 898's and shorts to get the best "idea" of that marca. To me, it's definitely a full bodied cigar (even the little shorts) that hits you with a bold spicy punch from the first puff. It's well balanced with some creamy sweetness so it's not a spice bomb all the way. I've only been smoking for a year, but I'm starting to get a general idea of the big marcas' taste profiles. Only one that confuses me is Montecristo, I've gotten completely different profiles from even the same box.
CanuckSARTech Posted April 17, 2013 Posted April 17, 2013 I'm not sure if it's a sticky somewhere, but this is a doc that I saved from when Rob did a thread years back, and got FOH'ers general views of Habanos flavour profiles: Cuban Cigar Brands' Flavour Profiles (from FOH).doc
gersonmorelli Posted April 17, 2013 Posted April 17, 2013 I can relate to the "salted caramel" flavor profile of the PSP2. I haven't smoked one in a while, but I remember having several from 08 that tasted like peanut butter packing some spicyness on the nose.

That's exactly what I was after Thanks for sharing
jedipastor Posted April 17, 2013 Posted April 17, 2013 I think the PSP2 tastes very Partagas. Each vitola has it's uniqueness, of course, a lot like Bolivar. To me, Partagas is dark, rich earth and spices, especially baking spices. There is often nuttiness and a kind of tanginess too that I can't really describe well (reminds me of a lot of NCs). As with most Cuban tobacco, there is some sweetness there too. I've had PSD4s, P2s, and others that have the "salted caramel" thing you're talking about, and I love that. I do wish it was more prevalent, though.
polarbear Posted April 17, 2013 Author Posted April 17, 2013 Apart from the PSP2 and PSD4 my experience with Partagas is pretty limited I think a box of 898's is on the cards now
Knvb Posted April 17, 2013 Posted April 17, 2013 im on my 2nd P2 box and i for me they are Partagas taste all the way.... P2 E2 and D4 all have the classic partagas flavors imho... recently ive become great friends with the C3 898 and Lusitania Sincerely, Budding Partagas *****
ironchefscott Posted April 20, 2013 Posted April 20, 2013 I feel as if I am a budding pardigas ***** as well. I too have experenced that salted caramel in the last 09 psp2 I have had. I can't wait to try a 898 and Lusitania soon!
