IcedCanuck Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 Cigar: Cohiba Maduro 5 Genios Box Code: OGA MAY 2011 Length: 140mm Ring Gauge: 52 Smoke time: 1.5 hours Construction The wrapper is a dark maduro wrapper. It reminds me a lot of an EL wrapper. It is not as dark some non-Cubans I have seen nor is the colour consistent from top to bottom. I think this is a good thing because it tells me the wrapper has not been dyed. There are no hard spots and the entire cigar has a bit of a spongy give to it when it is lightly squeezed. There is not a strong smell to this cigar; in fact it almost has no smell to it at all. What I can smell is a little bit of a barnyard but not much. Cold Draw The draw seemed very good to me. Not too tight and not too loose essentially exactly what I have come to expect from all things Cohiba. Tastes of cold tobacco and nothing else. I was a bit perplexed at this point as I was expecting ... something. I actually found this very odd. It was the first time in a long time that I have tasted so little off a cold draw. The draw seemed very good At any rate it was time to light it on fire. I paired the cigar with my what has been my usual as of late at the cigar lounge; a nice cold Stella. 1/3 Lots and lots of smoke, the draw is phenomenal. I got lots of cream and some cocoa. As the smoke filled my mouth I could not help but notice how velvety smooth it feels. Although this cigar is wrapped in a Cuban maduro wrapper it does not taste like any of the Cuban ELs I have smoked. There are certainly hints of the same DNA though. I started detecting hints of cedar towards the end of the first third. The ash is mostly grey with white spots. Every now and then I see white spots on the ash and I am not really sure why but there they are. I had to make a few minor burn corrections but I suspect it was due to my clipper not doing a very good job or me not using the clipper very well. 2/3 Still getting lots of cream, the cedar is more pronounced, toasted tobacco, more cocoa, and some pepper has joined the party. This cigar, to me, seems like a cross between a Siglo VI and a generic Cuban EL but is not dead ringer for either one. More burn issues. 3/3 The last third was almost the same as the second third but the toasted tobacco flavour was in full effect at this point. I started to taste some coffee towards the end of the last third. Overall I am still a bit disappointed with this cigar. I smoke one of these about every six months just to see how they are progressing. I am actually quite optimistic that they are going to turn into a beautiful cigar with some time. The very first one I smoked was terrible, the second much better, and this third one has been the best so far. ROTT I think Siglo VI is much better then this cigar and frankly a cigar that I prefer. This is a good cigar so long as you do not look at the price for which it sells. For the money I would take a Siglo VI over the Genios any day. Perhaps with some more age on them they will come into their own. I found the overall taste of this cigar is not overpowering to the palate and it was enjoyable.
Bahnofstrasse Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 Nice review! I am going to try one of the original 07 Genios hopefully this weekend to see how they are coming along. If it smokes as well as the 07 Magicos that I had a couple of weeks back, I will be very happy. As you point out, I have gotten the same that the Cohiba Maduro line benefits from a little age versus ROTT.
Rye Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 Nice review! As much as I love the Secretos, I have not been much of a fan of these, or the magicos. This review helps solidify the lack of these in my humi spaces.
