capnshazam Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 Hey guys. I'm headed down to Austin today for the f1 race and was wondering if there are any good cigar lounges/store where I can pick up a stick or two. For an extremely complicated but stupid reason Im not able to bring my own sticks down. Also any good food recs are appreciated.
brazoseagle Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 I can't help you there. I do know that smoking has been pretty much outlawed in all of Austin, even as far as on your own private property outdoors???, but I'm sure there may be a lar cigounge or two left, but I've heard the crack down on smoke has been nothing short of rediculous. In other advice. Before you leave Austin you should do the following: 1) Go eat at Franklin's BBQ in Austin, - get there early and get in line, it's worth the wait. 2) Take the 30 minute drive to Lockhart (the beginning of BBQ!) and go eat to Black's BBQ (where Brisket was invented) get the brisket and beef rib, and go to Kreuz Market or Smitty's and try their Beef and Sausage!!! Also if you want something more upscale: Uni - Best Sushi in Texas, Jame Beard Award st Winner, Best New Chef in America Winner, Best New Restaurant in America Winner This place is unbeleiveable, the chef has been all over TV lately. Congress Austin - Also many awards - Chef David Bull - owner, is a buddy of mine, and he is all over TV alot too, even competed on Iron Chef a couple of years back. It's very good as well!!! Best Steak Tartare I've ever had (secret is parmesean infused olive oil) Sorry I can't help you with the smoke, but I can with the food and drink.
Rushman Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 There is an overpriced cigar shop/memorabillia store called Heroes and Legacies at the Arboretum - they have a private lounge and will usually allow a day pass of you are looking to smoke on besides that, my memory fades!
capnshazam Posted November 15, 2012 Author Posted November 15, 2012 Thanks for the Tip Brazos. My brother is flying in Saturday so we will take up all of those restaurants and probably a few bars we stumble into during our travels. My hotel is on the north end of Austin on Research Blvd. It was the only place not sold out that I could afford when the race dates were announced over a year ago :/
kyee Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 Cool River used to be my go to place to have a drink and smoke. Sad to see the smoking ban take them down too. You can still smoke in the strip clubs though. Don't ask me how I know...
brazoseagle Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 On 6th street. Maggie Mae's and Pete's Dueling Piano bar are my favorite bars. Always a good time!!!
brazoseagle Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 Up on the North End, Z'Tejas is a great place to eat with a spectacular view as well.
brazoseagle Posted November 16, 2012 Posted November 16, 2012 but can you smoke at any of those places? It's Austin....... Of course not!
capnshazam Posted November 16, 2012 Author Posted November 16, 2012 I didn't realize Austin was that much of a pain in the A** with the smoking.
brazoseagle Posted November 16, 2012 Posted November 16, 2012 I didn't realize Austin was that much of a pain in the A** with the smoking. Austin is barely part of Texas, Very liberal and "progressive" and hippieish. Austin is the San Francisco of Texas.
celtmick1984 Posted November 17, 2012 Posted November 17, 2012 The blueberry in the tomato soup, as they say. Fonda San Miguel is an excellent option for Tex-mex, though a little bit of drive, and, if you don't despise hippie culture, Freebirds is a good place for Chipotle-style food (though better as I recall).
Guest RobinFadal Posted November 17, 2012 Posted November 17, 2012 Austin is barely part of Texas, Very liberal and "progressive" and hippieish. Austin is the San Francisco of Texas. Ditto. Unfortunately I learned this the hard way.

This place is still around. Did Chuy's alot. Salt Lick & Rudy's BBQ were great! Hook'em!
mk05 Posted November 17, 2012 Posted November 17, 2012 but can you smoke at any of those places? It's Austin....... Of course not! I think we missed the point here.
Rushman Posted November 18, 2012 Posted November 18, 2012 Austin is a fantastic place to visit or live. Forget politics, it's got everything you could want in a city, maybe minus the smoking. Lived there twice for a combined 15 years or so. --- I am here: http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=29.507107,-98.671799
khomeinist Posted November 18, 2012 Posted November 18, 2012 I think we missed the point here. Nah. Austin has a 'special' rep down here in Tejas. Lots of folks think of it as a hippy hipster hell. But what do I know. I lived in the SF Bay Area for years......
brazoseagle Posted November 27, 2012 Posted November 27, 2012 Well........ Any update, pics, visits to the recommended spots???
