BrotherBear Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 My local B&M shop has Hocniel Díaz Valdés coming by to do a rolling demonstration. Anyone ever hear of him? Hocniel Díaz Valdés was born in Havana, on January 15th, 1981. He started working at the Partagás Factory in 1998. For the past 14 years he has worked as a cigar roller; he has also been a teacher and Director of the cigar rolling school. Hocniel has performed demonstrations in several countries around the world. He will be visiting Specialty Tobacco Shops throughout Canada from August until November 2012. His travels will bring him to Victory Cigars on Friday September 21st from 3 pm to 8 pm, and Saturday September 22nd from 12 noon until 5 pm. Please plan on coming to see Hocniel as he demonstrates his mastery with cigars; he speaks English so you will be able to get your questions answered first hand!

Sounds like an other roller I know who came out of Partagas and was sent on tour out to Asia for his first rodeo... I'll text a friend of ours in Havana to see what he can tell me about him.
tmac77 Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 Met him a few weeks back at the S&S here in Toronto and bought some of his cigars. He claims to know Rob (Sven)allthough not sure if he understood the question even though his enlish is quite good. Rolls a strong cigar blend. Tom
cottierm Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 Hi Marc, Just back from our B&M shop. Mr. Valdès is a very nice man who indeed speaks English perfectly. This afternoon he is rolling robustos (at CAN$ 20 a piece) and some hybrid coronas/coronas gordas (at CAN$ 15 each; the size of a corona but with the gauge of a corona gorda). He may (or may not) roll different sizes tomorrow and the day after at the same B&M (I forgot to ask the question). Best, Michel

Diamondog Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 Seems like all these rollers in the shops here that tour charge quite a bit for unknown sticks...not knocking their product, no problem paying a good buck for a known guy like Hamlet but just seems expensive to me otherwise...maybe I'm off base, I get making money so if I am off base let me know...

maverickdrinker Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 All roller prices in Canada are standardized. $15.00 for a corona, $20.00 for a robusto etc. Doesn't matter who the roller is

BrotherBear Posted September 22, 2012 Author Posted September 22, 2012 I just picked up 2 robustos and 2 coronas. Will let you know what I think tomorrow... I'll tell you what though... ugly roll. I think he's too used to having the moulds to shape his cigars and these fill really loose.
