joshb Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 Hey Guys, hope you enjoy my mini-reviews from this month's smokes.... HdM Short Piramides - one of the better constructed sticks from the box, which is varied. Rough but appealing dark brown wrapper with visible seams. Cold draw is chocolate and hay and twangy tobacco. Mild to medium in flavor and body and mild in strength with creamy chocolate flavors. Scent of resting smoke is pure mocha, extremely rich and smooth. Some youthful grassiness. Second third, body ramps up a bit with a tiny bit of spice and tobacco flavors, more mocha, burning very quickly. Sme breadlines but a touch bitter at the end. Large tunnel all the way through, but no bother. Not a regular rotation type smoke for me, glad I have a box, but happy its only a box of 10. 4/1/12 Saint Luis Rey 'A' - very leafy looking wrapper with noticeable veins but very smooth. First thought is similar to choix supreme with fruits and breads, like sourdough toast with apricot jam. Medium body and flavors, pretty strong kick though, this one actually beat me up a bit. Very unique, not right in my wheelhouse but a nice change of pace. 4/1/12 Cohiba Siglo II - perfect construction, almost Veinless pale brown wrapper, very firm. Amazing first light flavors, super creamy and refined, perfect Cuban draw. Woody with clean and detailed tobacco twang and creamy elegant body, nice spice here and there with an extremely nutty almost meaty aftertaste, wonderful. Stayed very refined with no bitterness, Medium body, med-full flavor, med strength, at the end like smoking peanut butter! Excellent+. 4/6/12 Monte No.4 - pretty rough looking but covered in plume. Light wrapper, not much oil. Very mild stick, lacking much of the monte profile. Very smooth but not much flavor, Meh. Razor sharp burn and fine ash that never flaked. 4/12/12 ScdlH el principe - pretty flat, smells good, perhaps my taster is off, second today. 4/12/12 Ramon Allones Superiores - this cigar has an absolutely beautiful wrapper that is shiny and stretched tight. Great weight and feel in the hand, I've been itching to smoke this since I moved it into my desktop. Really strong spice for the first 1/4 inch or so, very dominating pepper blast. Still fairly rough around the edges in a charming way, this is a serious smoke. first third - leather, wood and pepper over a meaty frame of rich tobacco, full body and flavor. Second third - Flat for a bit then into toasty wood and creamy undertones, med body and flavor. Last third - med body and med-full flavor, rich leathery flavors with some spice creeping back in, very complex now but showing some youth. Still creamy wood weaving back in. Flawless burn required no corrections at all, strength was med ramping to strong in the last third. Rustic rather than refined but very enjoyable and quite the powerhouse. I can only imagine these will be great in a few more years, grabbing another box or two. 4/20/12 Monte Petit Edmundo - couldn't wait on this one, torched it the day after they came in. Mottled dark mocha wrapper, this one had a bit of damage from a splinter in the box so that was my excuse to smoke it now... Great early day smoke with coffee. Creamy and rich mild-med body, with a toasty undercurrent. Lots of coffee at the end. Mild-med strength, Resting smoke smelled like a warm chocolate bar. A bit muddled and im sure that will sort out after acclimation to their new home. Yummy. Wavy burn 4/21/12 Party Short - absolute dud. Flavorless and kinda nasty. Tossed about an inch in. 4/21/12 La Gloria MdO No.2 - Pretty cigar, very elegant. Some fruits and breadyness on first light, transitions to mild honeyed tobacco and dough. Very refined but one tone. Sme grassiness and youth showing. 2nd third, excellent draw and smoke production. Sourdough bread with some nuttiness and hay showing through, picking up some body, extremely refined smoke but still showing youth, fruits havent shown up again, very twangy. Last third, more of the same, then creamy fruits come back strong with some spice (not pepper). Perfect burn, very cool till the end, super refined and somewhat subtle. Now I need to find more.... 4/22/12 Monte PE - dark and oily, full pack, great smell. Love this cigar, again with morning with coffee, really yummy. Creamy, coffee flavors, some spice at the mid point, very satisfying med body/flavor and low strength. This one is a bit more twangy than the last and goes a touch bitter at the midway, last third is on point, stays cool till the end. Wavy burn needed a couple corrections. 4/28/12 Party short - from dress box, better thn the last for sure, but still not amazing. Very straightforward and kinda abbreviated. Leather, tobacco.... '03 Hoyo Des Dieux - From cab. Seriously, smells ridiculously good. 1st third, toasted marshmallow, light wood framing with tobacco and light spice on the back. Great creamy mild/med body with incredible depth of flavor, extremely smooth, cinnamon and spices on the resting smoke. Second third, more of the same with some stone fruits coming in,turning into intense cherry flavors. Ramping up in body and strength. Last third stays the same, still plenty of kick. This is really good.4/30/12 Best of the month: Siglo II by a nose. Super close runner up is the '03 Des Dieux. MVP: Monte PE, gonna buy several boxes. Yay April!

joshb Posted May 1, 2012 Author Posted May 1, 2012 Wow great review(s) Siglo II is my fav cigar hands down also, the 2011 batch is just any chance you have box codes? I don't have a box code or the Siglo, it was from a bunch of singles. I do have some other box codes, I'll try to get them in tonight. Definitely picking up a box of these.... Yeah, definitely enjoyed your mini-reviews. Whats the body of LGC mdo 2 like? mild? I found it to be mild moving towards medium. It's definitely a complex connoisseur's cigar, not a powerhouse....that being said, that was my only sample. Immediate chased down a box though... Cheers!
randomhero1090 Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 There is something about a somewhat fresh Monte PE that I love. I smoke them at about the 1 year mark and they are just a joy. Not overly complex, but nice spice and cream. I didn't get chocolate, but a bit of that coffee bite for sure. I had 2 x 10ct boxes from MAR '11. Only 4 left, and I think I smoked 8 of them in February of this year alone. Thank god I have 2 x 10ct boxes from AUG '11 on deck!
