I've reduced calorie consumption, most notably beer, and started excercising again. I'm down 8 pounds. Based on my research, at 6'1 (185cm), my base metabolic burn rate is about 2100-2200 calories. That is the amount of calories I need in order to maintain steady state without excercise. That is unfortunately less than I expected. Since a pound equals about 3500 calories that means some combination of diet and exercise that equals about 1000 calories per day off this number is needed to generate weight loss of about 2 pounds per week.

I hope somebody can tell me I didn't calculate this correctly... :lookaround:

It would be great if it were simply an issue of calories in and calories out but I'm afraid its far more complex than that. For a thorough explanation you'll want to pick up "Good Calories, bad calories" by Gary Taubes. If you drastically cut calories and increase activity you will certainly see results for a little while. The reason why those results will come to a screeching halt after 4-8 weeks is that both of those inputs cause a stress response known as cortisol. Cortisol causes a reduction in key hormones such as testosterone and growth hormone as well as causes insulin resistance. YOU CANT STORE FAT WITHOUT INSULIN! Ever see a fat type 1 diabetic, I highly doubt it? Carbohydrate is the key culprit causing an insulin response, protein to a far lesser extent and almost none from fat. The key is constant slow movement ie walking, brief yet very intense sporatic bouts of exercise ie 2-3 weight lifting sessions a week, solid sleep, and a lowish carbohydrate paleo diet, along with some good sun exposure and you have yourself a formula for total health in addition to great body composition.

eating better but I really need to start the running/cycling portion. Work has just been too doggone stressful to start running.

Also, I get my wife back this week. She is getting ready to take one of the CPA exams and I have almost been a single parent for about 6 weeks.

I'll try to pick up a copy of that book. Thanks for the tip.

Forgive me Brothers for I have sinned. This week cheesecake, bbq and booze. Will shot for the 260's this week. I'm sure my competitive nature will come out after March weigh in and I see where I stand in the competition.
