bassman Posted December 18, 2011 Posted December 18, 2011 Anyone who knows me knows I love steam trains & this is a classic train movie taking place in WWII France. The Allies are closing in & the Nazis are trying to take a trainload of looted art back to Germany. Dark, dirty, gritty & very realistic. Shot in black & white, which really conveys the mood. Burt Lancaster does all his own stunts. I've seen it a zillion times, but it was on again last night, uncut & commercial free, so couldn't resist. Those Nazis were mean!
Torontonian Posted December 21, 2011 Posted December 21, 2011 Good film. Anything with Paul Scofield in it is worth watching. He was one of the greatest actors of the twentieth century - top five for me. Have you seen Mel Gibson's Hamlet? The movie is just mediocre, and Gibson's performance is one-dimensional. But Scofield plays the ghost, and it is harrowing.
