Freefallguy Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 Greetings from Nicaragua, Having spent the night at a hotel in Managua and with full access to the internet for a moment I thought I’d file a quick report of our feeding program while in country. It has been a physically and emotionally draining visit. I had an associate in country for the first time and tasked with keeping him safe. He wanted to see as much as possible; we visited six feeding centers in two days. I put him on the plane yesterday afternoon; mission accomplished times two. First order of business was to deliver money received from the Mega Herf in Toronto. Thank you Frank and all who participated. Roberto is our indigenous coordinator and the money was well received. He receives rice and soy packets from Feed the Starving children and then with our money he is able to sweeten the pot with oil, onion, tomatoes, sweet peppers and chicken or beef ribs as funds permit. I have somewhat steeled myself, for self preservation, against the generally deplorable situation here but I was taken aback by my first visit to the chureca: a city dump. Literally across the road from the dump is a community living under unbelievably cruel circumstances. Their survival depends upon what food can be scavenged from the dump and what scrap they manage to gather and sell. As we arrived they streamed out of the woods for a meal. Roberto and his team lend some assistance in two meals a week. The food is doled out youngest to the oldest child and then the adults line up for a share. This particular day we fed sixty-one people. I was not prepared for what I saw here... It may seem like a bandaid but it matters so much to each child we feed twice a week. Many many thanks to our brethren in Toronto. Thank you Hermano El Presidente for enlarging our network. And Roberto, thanks for your vision and getting the job done. Bravo.
Peter11216 Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 Thanks for posting this. I hope you'll send some updates. As someone who smokes Nicaraguan tobacco, your post really made me think. All the Best, Pete

cckandb24 Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 Great work. I will be in Managua the end of march of 2012 working with bridges of hope building a house and working at an orphanage and school outside of the city dump. The standard of living in Nicaragua is pretty bad and the child sex trade is out of control.
frenchkiwi Posted December 7, 2011 Posted December 7, 2011 thanks for the update. so many places like this in the economic "periphery" around the world. Prez - where is that info i once saw about donating $1 with each cigar purchase - is that for this same program or...?
