maverickdrinker Posted November 29, 2011 Posted November 29, 2011 was in the man cave last night and decided that I wanted an exhaust fan in order to keep the heat in and blow the smoke out during the winter. Would anyone be able to provide a referral to someone who can install this for me? TIA A
mbrody Posted November 29, 2011 Posted November 29, 2011 I used an electrician to install a smoke eater in my garage AKA man cave. I did not use an exhaust fan b/c I did not want to lose heat. An exhaust needs an intake to be effective. I could not intake warm air...therefore, I clean the same air.
maverickdrinker Posted November 29, 2011 Author Posted November 29, 2011 what do you use for heating? I am using a propane heater. I like the idea of using a smoke eater and/or air purifier however, I don't it handles the concern of carbon monoxide build up as I run the propane tank. Currently, I crack the door open a bit as I let the propane heater run to reduce the concern of carbon monoxide. I also have a carbon monoxide detector for added security.
BrotherBear Posted November 29, 2011 Posted November 29, 2011 Art, if you are planning on going with a bathroom fan, try calling a few bathroom reno guys. Should be a simple install. Come over to my place if you want some ideas on garage set ups...

To minimise heat loss, you need to have a simple air to air heat exchanger so that the warm exhaust air warms the cold intake air. Fan, ducting, and heat exchanger required aka "Heat Recovery Ventilator".

Currently, I crack the door open a bit as I let the propane heater run to reduce the concern of carbon monoxide. I also have a carbon monoxide detector for added security. I use a Kerosene heater. When it is really cold, I keep the door closed. If moderate, I crack it a bit for a little outside ventillation. Works like a champ. Electricians are generally used to install bathroom fans, etc., so I would start there if you go that route. In a perfect world, like a real interior smoking room, a heat exchange system is proper as trevor mentioned. For the garage, it is great.
