Last weekend I was at the Ottawa Wine and Food Show. To my surprise there was a booth with Johnnie Walker Double Black realizing it is not yet available in Canada. After sampling the whiskey there were a multitude of things going through my mind, the sweetness, smoothness, flavour-packed (oak) and the combinations of cigars it would accompany. If you haven't tried it I highly recommend you do. It would really go well with cigars with a wood and nutty flavour and would be quite enjoyable. Unfortunately, before I am able to enjoy this whiskey with a cigar I have to wait until it is released in Canada.

Enjoy!

I have been meaning to post on this stuff for a week now! I bought two bottles from local package store last week when they got it in. I am in love. It is amazing blend of smoky and sweet. It definitely gives a nod to Lagavulin but still has some of that west highland toffee. I am really hoping they keep it around for a while although my understanding is that is gone once current stock runs out. My package store has about 10-15 more bottles. I wish i could buy them all but now is not the time. I have had a variety of cigars with it so far and of course, all work great for me. So far, I like it best neat. I prefer Black with a few cubes but the Double is just right as is. Thanks for the post!

I love my smokey Islay whiskies, but I have to say I was disappointed with the Double Black when I tried it. My father picked up a bottle Duty free in the US, and we gave it a try with a Partagas P2. The Double Black has been touted as much "smokier" than the regular Johnny Black, but we found nothing like that. Not a bad whisky, by any stretch.....just not what we expected.

I'll take my Ardbeg Airigh Nam Beist or Lagavulin 16 over it any day!

Just my $0.02

Don't know what the situation is where you are located by have seen it in various duty free stores around the world.

Including Philadelphia and Newark.

it is a nice enough whiskey, I myself prefer single malts but I do like the sweet smokey taste.

Damn! I was there last week as well and do not recall seeing the Johnnie Walker stand but I did get pretty drunk! I did find one scotch stand that had Macallan and two others I can't recall. Did they mention if it will be sold in the LCBO?

It's out already and there's plenty of stock to go around.

Several stores in the New York/Connecticut area are carrying it now. I am normally a single malt drinker but I tried it - just as a change of pace - and enjoyed it alot. I also would highly recommend trying it.

About 18mths ago, the Double Black was trialled in the 6 highest volume duty free stores across the world (strangely enough, Sydney was one of them). As it has had some quite favourable reviews and received strong consumer support, it has been progressively expanded to the normal retail market.

It does have a nice smokey flavour, stronger than the Black, but doesn't really hold a candle to an Islay scotch. For the price (marginally above the Black), it is a cheaper alternative to the like of Lagavulin, Laphroaig, etc.

As a blended scotch, the JW DB is very decent. perfect10.gif

I usually start with half a finger of it in my glass to get my taste bearings before moving on to my single malts. I don't consider it as a single malt replacement though. If you like the Islay peaty notes in JW, you should check out the single malts from Caol Ila as it is used in the JW blends.

I am located in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. I understand that it is available in other places, but I know the distract manager for Diageo (distributor) and he said it is still not available in Canada.

I would like to hear which cigars you have tried the whiskey with and which is your favourite to smoke with the whiskey.

Thanks gentleman,

It wasn't at a specific stand. It was at the Royal Oak stand. The Royal Oak also was giving samples of Stella as well. Perhaps we will have to get together for a cigar one time IcedCanuck.
