lately I have been looking for Cuban cigars that have a huge amount complexity, I find my self wanting a cigar that takes me for a ride and yet I find that so many cigars lack this ability. I smoke all sizes, brands and strengths of cigars and have found only a few that I would say are extremely complex. what do you think? what cigars have you found to be more complex then average?

I have HUGE passion for Cuban cigars and I tend to regard the smoking of one an event. I've found some very complex cigars out of Cuba and some more memorable cigars that showed great complexity were:

Juan Lopez Obus..... This one took me for a ride

Montecristo Edmundo..... I don't usually consider this to be a complex cigar but I have some from 2006 that reveal many rich rich flavors

Cohiba Esplendido..... Once again, this cigar never ceases to amaze me with it's many flavors

But...............................

I realize that this is a forum for Cuban cigars but a cigar that has shown me a tremendous ability to give you a real roller coaster ride of many flavors is the Arturo Fuente Opus X.... There's a reason why it costs as much as it does....... It is a very high quality complex cigar.........

Once again, I apologize for bringing up a Non-Cuban.......

Try a Partagas 898V...I find these to be nice and complex. Also aged HdM Le Hoyo Des Dieux.

To my taste buds very few cigars on release have complex flavors. One that springs to mind recently is the Behike's which have some complex flavors from the get go.

Like wine I think that the passage of time adds a speical magic to the cigar. When I think of truly complex memorable cigars the vast majority have been aged at least 5-7 years and many over 10 years. The real magic of CC comes with age IMHO.

I used to think of complexity as a cigar which changes / evolves over the course of smoking. I've come around more to looking at complexity

as an array of flavors regardless of how these flavore are delivered.

I'm another for the Upmann Sir Winston, along with the Upmann Magnum 46, some Bolivars - quite a few cigars, actually.

I think the idiom "... A watched pot never boils " is relevent here.

In my experience the more you seek magnificent complexity or the "Holy Grail" cigar the more frustrated you become.

Make sure your cigars are in great condition, have been stored in your ideal RH and Temp for a few months. Make sure your state of mind is neutral to the experience (limit your expectation). Cigars are always secondary.

it makes a real difference ;)

Taking the above into account (and the fact your palate is unique) the following are cigars which consistently perform in terms of complexity for me.

Aged des Dieux.

Upmann Sir Winston

Bolivar Corona Extra

Montecristo Especial

Cohiba Esplendido (great examples).

Partagas Lusi

Bolivar Petit Corona (great examples)

Cohiba Lancero

ERDM Grandes de Espana

Partagas SDC

Raphael Gonzalez Lonsdale

Hoyo des Dieux

Cohiba Coronas Especiales/Lanceros

Trinidad Fundadores

Monte Especiales 1/2

Bolivar CE/PC/CG

LGC MDO 1/2/3/4

SLR DC

Quai D'Orsay Coronas/Imperiales

Complexity all over the place. Smoke slowly and find it.....

Well said

its true the the RH can make a huge difference in flavor and I do tend to put a cigar a pedestal if it something that been raved about i have to stop doing that because anything less then spectacular and i say its bland or just not like it.
