JSPEC Posted September 18, 2011 Posted September 18, 2011 Hello FOH, Today I decided to do my first ever cigar review. I wanted to cover something not seen at FOH and not very "in the main" so to speak. Special thanks goes out to Leander for generously providing me with a great specimen for this review, the Vegueros Especiales No. 1 (2001) paired with a Cappuccino. Construction- Very elegant looking, smooth colorado wrapper with minimal veins if any. Tightly rolled and packed considerably well. Draw- Constricted even though you cut to open it up, managable with some massaging. Does not take away from experience. Aroma at Cold- Gives off a nice pungent smell of Cedar, faint hints of sweetness and cuban tobacco. Aroma lit- Very pleasent light tobacco with a cedar zing. Burn- Great burn requiring no touch ups, fairly sharp and self correcting if it strays. Smoke- Very light white smoke Ash- slight browning, grey ash. Held together for about 1.5 inches. When would fall off stayed intact even though it was flaky. Opening- Easily toasted and lit because of its small ring guage; the opening provided a smooth initial hit of coffee bean and faint light cream which lingers on the pallette. 1/3rd- Coffee bean promotes itself as the core flavour with hints of woodiness, nutiness and a lingering light cream, which very nicely plays with the creaminess of the cappuccino. End of 1/3rd- A very pleaseant transition from Coffee bean into a more pronounced light cream. Now coffee bean becomes a very prominent roasted coffee bean and takes the reigns with a very faint woody nut only tickleing the taste buds and dissapearing rapidly as if running from the dominant roasted coffee. 2/3rd- The roasted coffee being once the dominant flavour begins to die as the light cream becomes more pronounced and lingering lending itself to the cappuccino very well. The woody nut flavour begins to build on the pallette providing a nice contrast. End of 2/3rd- The light cream begins to graciously bow out as the core roasted coffee becomes more pronounced but still overshadowed by a building player, woody nut, that comes to the forefront. 3/3rd- A very suprising spice begins to emerge with each puff, building on intensity and lingering on the lips. The light cream is now forgotten and the woody nut now transitions into a well roasted nuttiness with a fairly faint coffee bean undertone. The cappuccino, now cooled, provides a great cooling of the building spice that lingers on the lips and tounge Final 3/3rd- Spice picks up greatly, however at no moment is it unpleasent with the woody nut now being overshadowed by a smokey wood and the emergence of black pepper tickling the back of the throat. The roasted coffee although still there is very faint and dissapears rapidly. Although these flavours bombard the pallette there is a overshadowing of a bitterness that develops during the final stages of the cigar. Overall thoughts- This cigar is a great cigar if not looking for a overly complicated stick. The flavours, one can predict and anticipate with a variability of surprise (Spice). At no moment is this cigar overpowering, starting from a mild, transitioning into a light medium and then to a medium body continuing until the close. It is entertaining, however you would want it to transition with a little more "pizzaz"; this could make the less patient groan for something more exciting to happen quicker . Towards the Final 3rd of the cigar it tends to get bitter, this could be due to its young age or the tar build-up where cut. I would rate this cigar a 85-86, given some age it could potentially hit a 87 but overall it is very enjoyable and wouldn't mind laying some down to age for a while. Thanks for reading and again special thanks to my friend Leander for providing this cigar, Cheers.
