CBL Posted August 10, 2011 Posted August 10, 2011 This September I'll start my final year of University and I'm hoping to do a master degree after that. I've been studying in Taiwan for the past 3 years and all my classes have been in Chinese which is a huge pain in the ass for me as my Chinese is pretty dismal. Therefor I have my heart set on studying in an English speaking country after I graduate to get a little more out of my school career. If all goes well I'll graduate with a degree in Journalism from the Advertising department and I've always wanted to study Psychology (cognitive/human behavior) and use that in my future career in Advertising. Right now I have my eyes set on NYU which has a pretty good Psychology department that allows you to choose your own classes that best suit your career choice. I've checked out Australia as well, as studying in Brisbane would have a couple of advantages you'll probably all be able to figure out But Australian schools require you to have a Bachelors in Psychology if you want to do a master degree (as does the country I'm from) Maybe someone can give me some advice on school options, perhaps a double Bachelor degree is a more realistic choice if I want to study Psychology. Any advice is very welcome!
dicko Posted August 10, 2011 Posted August 10, 2011 University of Western Australia. The buildings look like an old syle English univeristy except it's always sunny. Lots of gardens and trees. From our Oak Lawn you can see the Swan River, which is 70m away and it is 5 minutes drive from some of the best beaches in the world. Oh, did I mention there are dozens of girls who look like supermodels? (thats not a lie). haha i'm bias of course. I would love to have done some study in Melbourne as well. Awesome city, great bars, cafes and sports venues. Uni Melb and Monash are world class uni's.
CBL Posted August 10, 2011 Author Posted August 10, 2011 Sounds awesome! But if my gf finds out I'm planning on attending a school swarming with super model grade girls she'll probably cut your name of my body But I'll check out if I have any chance of getting in
dicko Posted August 10, 2011 Posted August 10, 2011 haha you don't want that! i should add, University of Queensland has a rep for having a very good atmosphere, plus you're close to the czar as you alluded to ;-)
Peter11216 Posted August 10, 2011 Posted August 10, 2011 I have some experience with NYU, and know a couple of professors with joint appointments in the psychology department. Unless you are independently wealthy, an undergraduate degree in the United States would be pretty tough because of how much it costs. Graduate schools (in the United States) on the other hand, usually provide grants and teaching jobs which will cover costs - however, only for PhD candidates, not for two year Master degree programmes. PM me if you'd like to chat about it more. Best, Pete
TankerT Posted August 10, 2011 Posted August 10, 2011 What I do know is that a double bachelors is normally a waste in the USA. There are two decent psychology programs in Madison Wisconsin. One is with the University of Wisconsin and the other is with Edgewood College. (Actually, one of my closest friends is the head of the Graduate Psychology Department at Edgewood. I could put you in touch with him if you had questions about his program.) Also, Madison, WI is often rated as one of the top 10 places to live in the USA. (It is pretty nice, if you don't mind snow.)

CBL Posted August 11, 2011 Author Posted August 11, 2011 University of Havana has a Psychology Department and takes foreign students You, my liege, are a flaming genius! My girlfriend suggested this earlier and I dismissed it entirely, assuming that the Cuban educational system was only for torchadors and "business school" where the HSA top probably comes from But I'll look into it! Thanks for all the other replies as well, that's why I love FOH. The combined knowledge here far exceeds that of 'just' cigars related topics!
CBL Posted August 11, 2011 Author Posted August 11, 2011 Just finished doing some more research and another major really caught my eye: English! I'm not a native English speaker but I LOVE the language, I've been teaching basic English to kids in Taiwan since I was 17 years old (young kids, 3 to 12) and would love to be able to back it up with an actual degree Some courses in creative writing would also help in my Advertising career. I'm really liking the University of Wisconsin that JThomas posted, but I'll look for some other options as well. English would probably also be a little easier for me to transfer to, as Psychology requiers a lot of basic classes that I'd have to pass before I can qualify for that major.

If you need any info on the University of Wisconsin, let me know. (Mind you... Playboy Magazine constantly rates it as a top 10 party school... and it is tops for academics in many areas too... Plus, there is a nice Cigar Bar close to the campus. And, I work close by if you need someone to show you around...) As far as Psychology degrees go, I don't know of other places, but in the US, you need at least a Master's degree to do anything in the field. I have some psychologists in the family. They all actually make a very good living.
TankerT Posted August 11, 2011 Posted August 11, 2011 I forgot to add... all the English majors I know are either unemployed or working in retail. But, then again, that is a USA specific thing... not sure about abroad.
CBL Posted August 11, 2011 Author Posted August 11, 2011 Thanks! I'm not too worried about finding a job, it's more that I have always loved psychology and the English language and would like to study it and get more aquainted with the subjects. I want to study Psychology to learn about human behavior and specifically consumer behavior and apply it to advertising. English just facinates me I tried to take a Literature class here in Taiwan on Shakespeare, but they didn't really go into any of the underlying meaning of his work and just used the plays to learn English, so that didn't really work out You have to understand, I grew up in The Netherlands where my English exceeded the teachers' since high school and now I study in Taiwan where English teachers have told me that I "don't have to come to class, it'd be boring for you, but I'll pass you anyway" My English is far from perfect, but it's something I want to be really good at and not just on a communication level, but understanding the language through and through. On the job note. It might not be something I'd want to do for a living but teaching English in Asia earns you a VERY decent living. It pays 5 to 10 times the minimum hourly wage most people earn.
TankerT Posted August 11, 2011 Posted August 11, 2011 Interesting angle. I wouldn't be surprised if the UW has classes in that arena, either in their Pych college or their Business college. (And... you can take entire courses from time to time that pick apart classic authors...) Maybe I should move to Asia and teach English... would be interesting. Good luck in your search. PM me if you have any questions about the UW or the city it is in.
partifan Posted August 11, 2011 Posted August 11, 2011 Boston University..... I have my Masters from BU and am working on my PhD from BU, and recommend it highly. It certainly isn't cheap, but it is a wonderful school
mazolaman Posted August 12, 2011 Posted August 12, 2011 Why not come to the home of the language? The weather is shite, your education will now cost a fortune, They're rioting on the streets, cigars cost a fortune....... What's not to like???!!! I think Havana wins.....
brazoseagle Posted August 12, 2011 Posted August 12, 2011 Baylor University in Texas has great programs for what you are talking about.
