So I'm on long service leave at the moment and laughing from home while my workmates at Virgin Blue Airlines (sorry, it’s now called Virgin Australia) battle a rather insolent ash cloud. This damn ash cloud, which started in Chile when some volcano blew its top, has somehow managed to meander Westwards across the Pacific Ocean, over Australia, continue on to South Africa, then South America, and bugger me dead if it hasn't decided to conduct a second worldly passage and come back again to Australia only a week after we got rid of it! As a result, the airlines here have been grounded, for at least another day or so, for the second week running.

Anyway. Back to my long service leave.

My desktop humidor was filled to the brim before my leave started in May, with the sole aim of spending some quality time out on my deck here in Brisbane this winter smoking. It’s only gotten as cold as 5deg Celsius, which is cold for a Queenslander. But it’s perfect cigar weather.

I spent a few days last week in Melbourne with a good mate who regularly splits cigar purchases with me. I was stuck in Melbourne because last week’s bloody ash cloud caused my flight home to Brisbane to be cancelled. No amount of sucking up to my workmates at Virgin saw my flight reinstated! My mate and I were both smoking Ramon Allones Specially Selected. In 3 words, very very nice. I’m not an expert; in fact, I’m far from it, but the cigars we smoked both hit personal jackpots. In the past my mate and I have always had a box of Hoyo Epi No. 2’s on the go, but I tell you what, the RASS left the Hoyo’s and pretty much all else we’d smoked for dead. Being in a Melbourne winter, we had a fire going in his courtyard. Not sure if it was legal, but as the young kids say, “whateverâ€! It was the sort of fire that ends up leaving you quite warm but covered in ash. At least I think the ash was from the fire, as it may have been from the ash cloud. We were also drinking a Laphroaig single malt.

I got home on Wednesday, and since then I’ve smoked a POR Larranaga PC and a Bolivar PC. The latter being a more memorable smoke than the former. If I can channel Smithy for a moment, the Boli exhibited some spice and coffee flavours side of things, and primarily it was a far stronger smoke. I really enjoyed it. Although I was a little miffed when my iPad got an inch and a half of Boli ash dropped on it, but I’ll put that down to the fact that I’d had a full glass of port from my barrel and wasn’t paying attention.

Tonight, with the Chilean ash cloud causing untold havoc stranding airline passengers everywhere along the eastern seaboard (AGAIN!), and also causing my few remaining Virgin Blue (sorry, Virgin Australia) shares to take a hammering, I smoked a Cohiba Robusto. I accompanied tonight’s long service leave offering with another ruby red glass from my port barrel, and I’m sitting here thinking, “who cares about a stupid ash cloud?†I mean, how good is the CoRo? It was the first Cohiba Robusto I’d smoked, and will not be the last. Forget about the old favourite Hoyo Epi 2, as this stogie has now jumped to the number 1 seed. Rafa Nadal will be worried. And apologies to the RASS from last week! Any stogie you smoke to the stage your fingertips are feeling very nervous must be a good one!

So I guess I’ve contributed partly to the ash cloud hovering over the top of Australia this past week. I don’t want to go back to work in two weeks; I just want to keep smoking.

I’ve got Partagas D4’s and Boli RCs to go from my Robusto Splits purchase, and I’m interested to hear what those more experienced than myself have to say on these two Robusto’s.

great post mate, I can almost smell those cigars!!

Ha. You could if there were any aircraft in the air!

And don't get me started on how bad the Dockers are. I hope you're an Eagles fan Dicko. They've got far more upside!

I actually support a melbourne team :cigar:

I'll give you a clue, I go for swan districts in the WAFL and they may have a similar guernsey to a certain notorious AFL club! :rotfl:

Proud West Aussie though!

Oh yeah as he yells "Hot Pies"!

Back to back in 2011. That's all I ask for. My favourite West Aussie at the moment is Sharrod Wellingham. He's going to a very very good footballer.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't the wind patterns have blown the ash cloud eastward across the Atlantic? :D

You're right Fuzz. This link confirms it blew eastwards.

Too much high school science class daydreaming on my part!
