Pinar del Rio currently undertakes a program for improvement and conservation soil in tobacco areas. The process, retained after declaring the country its way to the special period, comprises an investment plan that will extend for five years and that responds to the complex situation present in these areas, which have been under a strong productive operating system for years. Msc. Enrique Cruz Villate, head of the Provincial Group of Tobacco, said that throughout the territory 1 268 hectares will be attended. In addition, they will incorporate organic matter, vegetal filling, humus, calcium carbonate and magnecita. Each with important actions on soils, explained the expert, which provide magnesium, calcium and other chemicals.

In particular it will cover 2 709 hectares with canavalia, supplying nitrogen to growing through its green mass and it is considered undesirable plant controller. Canavalia planting, which should settle the tobacco fields six months before the start of each season, has not been extended to all areas, even under the effects of the severe drought prevailing in areas of Pinar del Río.

The vast majority of materials used in the program of soil conservation is located in the province, said the manager. The only one to be brought to the province in the magnecita, which will be moved to the territory from Jaruco deposits, in Mayabeque.

The quality of the leaf grown in Vueltabajo depends largely on the value of its land. Protecting them is an imperative for tobacco growers in Pinar del Rio. Their contribution to the domestic production is over 65 percent as well as a high percentage of layers for the production of the famous cigars.
