Just thought I'd share some thoughts on James Arness of "Gunsmoke" fame. From what I've heard he was a kind, good hearted individual. Kenneth Tobey, who was the hero in Arness's break through film, "The Thing," 1951, had shared his thoughts on him previously. Even though a leading man, Kenneth Tobey fell on hard financial times. James brought him on in a guest spot roll on "Gunsmoke." Tobey recalled that his part was in fact over after that shooting phase, yet Arness deliberately extended it out (unnecessarily) way past the roll's need. He knew that as long as Tobey was required to be on call there...he had to be paid extra for the whole time he was there, even though technically they were through with his part. Tobey said he'd always been grateful to Arness for doing that because he desparately needed the money - and apparently Arness knew that. And this way he could be paid and without having to be put in any potentially embarrassing spot.

And speaking of the "The Thing," Arness spoke of his part as the giant "vegetable-like" alien who was a world threat; "People think I'm ashamed of my role in that part. I'm very proud of my work in that movie! I was very glad to be part of it..."! Rest in Peace, James. You deserve your place in the Great Country up there with your brother Peter Graves...
