Rogers72 Posted April 13, 2011 Posted April 13, 2011 I thought that it would be nice to have a place to report on the various wines that we try. The wine world is SO big and it’s always nice to catalog our experiences for later reference. Whenever you try a WHITE wine, good or bad, let us hear about it here! Try and give as much info as possible so that others can search for it and try it if they desire. Producer, Varietals, Vintage, Price, Where Purchased, Tasting Notes, etc. Don’t be shy! Give us reviews on anything from the $5 bottle to the $5,000 bottle!
Rogers72 Posted April 21, 2011 Author Posted April 21, 2011 2009 Cakebread Chardonnay Napa Valley, California 100% Chardonnay $37.99 USD This is typically one of my favorite chardonnays and I usually buy about a case per year to keep around. It's a bit pricy for me and definitely not an everyday drinker but i like to have it around for special friends when they visit during the warmer months. The 2009 vintage is one of my favorite from memory. It seems to always be defined by a very fruity but not overly sweet character and very crisp with a clean finish. The 2009 seems to have more intense and discernable ripe pear and green apple flavors than other years. I highly recommend it.
lemmycaution Posted April 29, 2011 Posted April 29, 2011 Qupe Roussanne 2007. ($34.99) A great white wine. I would recommend this to people who don't usually like whites. Also a good change of pace from the other main white varietals. I think I'll have to get another bottle to see what happens with some age...
Rogers72 Posted May 2, 2011 Author Posted May 2, 2011 2006 Justin Chardonnay Paso Robles, CA $17.99 USD I picked this bottle up a few months ago and opened it on Saturday night. It was a dark, rich color in the glass. I assume from the little bit of age on it although i haven't tried any newer vintages. Lots of oak and pineapple on the nose and palate. Maybe some lemon peel. A little too much oak for my taste but I did enjoy it and would recommend if you are looking for that. I prefer chards on the light and crisp side.
Rogers72 Posted June 14, 2011 Author Posted June 14, 2011 2009 Conundrum White wine Blend Rutherford, CA $15.99 at a local shop Over the years, I have heard a great deal of hype about this one but never tried it until now. The story that I hear is that it is run by the same family that make the venerable Caymus. It used to be an actual part of the Caymus lineup but has since separated for one reason or another. Still run by the family but at a different site and maybe no longer directly associated with it. the general thought that I have heard on this is that it used to be much better "back then". I cannot say as this is my first tasting. Upon opening the bottle, the only thing that I know is that it is a blend...no idea of what grapes to expect. I was immediately intrigued. Its one of those wines that REALLY make you think. Its very unique. I wasn't sure about it at first but it really began to reveal itself and I fell in love. If i had to describe it in one word it would be "Rich". Decadent white flowers and honeysuckle. Creamy. I thought to myself along the way that it had to have a little Semillon in it. Not sure how much but after some research, it does. Below is an excerpt from their website about the blend: "After experimenting with 11 different white wine grapes, we chose the three that we considered the key ingredients, the aromas and flavors that form the foundation of the wine: Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and--for its intriguing floral/tropical character--Muscat Canelli. Then, from our "spice cabinet," we added small amounts of Sémillon and Viognier. Already, we were working with flavors and textures that formed a new and unprecedented combination--a conundrum, or puzzle to be teased out by the taster." I highly recommend it!

This is a fantastic white wine and a staple in my home. I only discovered it by recommendation about two years ago, but it has become such a big hit among family in friends, that I go through several cases of this wine each year. It is amazingly fruit forward, but not overly sweet. The blend does keep you wondering in terms of trying to figure out which grape is dominant. The blend is of five grapes and the precentage of each does change from vintage to vintage. I've seen this online for as little as $18.99 a bottle, but it sells closer to $27.00 @ B&Ms here in NY. At either price, I too would highly recommend that you give this wine a try. Great pick Rogers72...
Rogers72 Posted May 19, 2012 Author Posted May 19, 2012 2010 Cakebread Chardonnay Napa Valley, California 100% Chardonnay $37.99 USD My first bottle of Cakebread Chard from the '10 release. If you read review from last year, you know I'm in love with this one. For me, this year let me down a bit. I think 2009 was a banner year for California Chards. The 09 Cakebread was ripe and robust with loads of apple and pear. The 2010 is much less fruity and the fruit that exists is more lemon/citrus. Still good. Drinks way too easy and lacks the depth of prior years. Enjoyed with an 898V on May 17.
Rogers72 Posted May 19, 2012 Author Posted May 19, 2012 2010 Far Niente Chardonnay Napa Valley, California 100% Chardonnay $44.97 USD Gorgeous. Silky. Oily. Very little nose but the oil just coats and slams you with complex lemon and white truffle oil. Too damn good. Worth every penny. Enjoying right now on 5/19 with 08 Siglo III.
