Hello Fellow FOHers,

I was wondering about the relationship between a cigars aroma and it's age. In other words, will the cigars I place in the humidor today, smell the same in a year or two years, or will the aroma increase or decrease with age? (by aroma, I mean aroma at cold, just sitting in it's box) My thought or hope is that the aroma will become richer and fuller with age.

I look forward to seeing everyones thoughts on this.

Thank you,

Curtiss

Great question Curtiss - I don't have a direct answer. I haven't found much changes in richness per se over time, but what I have found with

some boxes is a change in type of aroma. For instance, a box with an extremely sharp, pungent aroma mellowing some, taking on more of

a sweeter barnyard character.

I imagine that over a long period of time, the aromas would have to change in some fashion.

I think it can intensify in some cases. Like in a SLB or a Varnished box the smell has no way of escaping and with no air going in or coming out the smell just grows stronger. I had a box of 898's that was sealed and after 5 or 6 years I opened it for the first time and it was like opening a crypt! The smell has never been the same since ;)

Hi Guys,

Thank you for your responses. My guess/hope is that in a cab box, the aroma would intensify/develope over time as the leaves matured together. The point that CBL highlights with the 'aroma never being the same', makes me wonder, is there a loss of a possitively developing aroma by opening the cab box too often? (like once a week...I just need to get a wiff of the wonderful tobacco  )

Thank you,

Curtiss

I have found nearly without exception that the aroma diminishes. If the box is only opened once upon purchase and then five years later opened a second time it can still be very aromatic, just not as sharp. If the box is opened a number of times in those five years, I have found that the aroma is usually greatly reduced. I wish it weren't so. -P

I bag all my boxes. I don't know if it is a contributing factor, but I find that aroma steadily increases over time. It then begins to evolve in to a rancio type of flavor still showing signs of originality. This is the period over 20 years and where my experience fades.
