Tampa1257 Posted November 20, 2005 Posted November 20, 2005 Looking at the photos, the cigar is in bad shape. It appears that it has gone from being over humidified to being extremely dried out. The binder and filler bursting through the wrapper kind of thing. I would not give up total hope, but if it was here, I would use some Pectin, which can generally be found in the "Canning Section" of any grocery store. I take a package of it and mix it with a small amount of water to make a "glue" type of consistency and use a small paint brush to apply the liquid on the damaged area of the cigar. This is excellent to use on any "repairs" that a cigar might need. The pectin is colorless, odorless and tasteless, so all it is doing is getting your cigar from falling apart until it can be smoked. I generally will leave a repaired cigar in the humidor for at least 30-45 days after the repair to make sure that the cigar is well adjusted to a stable rh environment. Good luck and let us know how you did with the cigar. Tampa
hazleem Posted November 20, 2005 Author Posted November 20, 2005 Thanks Tampa! Off to the grocery store tomorrow! -Haz-
Guest gorob23 Posted November 20, 2005 Posted November 20, 2005 pectin is good but I don't think this one can be saved, I hope I am wrong.. Rob
Phailure Posted November 20, 2005 Posted November 20, 2005 That thing looks like its been through quite alot! Good luck saving it.
Loki Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 PC, don't bother, unless you also build ships in bottles.
Bunker1028 Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 PC, it's you're call, but I performed massive, but successful surgery on a 99 VR Unico I stepped on after it fell from my ashtray, after just lighting it up. (Okay, I'm a ****) Tampa got it dead on with the pectin, but I took advice from a great source of info in HK, and use wrapper from other cigars to graft onto the patient. All I could say is it never looked uglier and smoked perfectly. If you want to spen the time, all that ciger needs is a little Nip/Tuck.
JMH Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 I'll second using the wrapper from a cheap cigar to help patch it up.
Freefallguy Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 » some advice. I'd toss it as well Haz man... you can always pull out another fine smoke without the fuss. NOW... if you were to pull out and find a broken rubber.... THEN you'd really have a problem!
harwellplant Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 if its worth it to you (and shorts would ride that line), have a domestic roller roll a new wrapper onto them. sometimes badly damaged wrappers like the one in your picture are irreparable with the pectin fix. its not going to taste 100% the same, but its better than not being able to taste them at all. i have some badly damaged cohiba dc els that got damaged due to some very poor shipping that i am going to have fixed this way.
hazleem Posted November 21, 2005 Author Posted November 21, 2005 Wrapper of cheap cigars? Where do you get those :-P I'm gonna try to fix it anyway... didn't make it to the grocery store yet cos it's the busy time of the year again! :-( -Haz-
longash4me Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 What's wrong with that picture? Looks ok to me. Aren't they ALL supposed to look like that? I get all my smokes from Tampa and although I have to be a little careful I don't set the furniture on fire, they get the job done. I just spit on them a little.

LOL, I must remember to have one of those "Exploding" cigars just for you longash4me the next time we meet up. A little spit is not going to fix the damage on that Partagas Short.
longash4me Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 My wife says a little spit fix's everything.
Van55 Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005 That cigar does look to be in bad shape, but I agree with Tampa that a bit of pectin to hold the wrapper in place is all it really needs. Be sure that, if anything, the cigar is over-humidified before you try to repair it, so that the flaps of wrapper can be moved and "glued" without breaking them. You won't have a cigar of aesthetic beauty when you've finished with it, but you will definitely have one that is smokeable.
ironman Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005 Did anyone else feel sad to see that cigar in that shape??:-( Ironman
guilow Posted November 24, 2005 Posted November 24, 2005 I agree that Pectin works great. I use it all the time because cigars crack in the dry air at 8000ft el. where I live outside of Denver, CO. But this one looks a bit too far for repairs. HOWEVER - Make sure you remove the wrapper on this one and use it for "grafting" on the next one you get that is cracked like this!
El Presidente Posted November 24, 2005 Posted November 24, 2005 Dig a hole in the yard Put it in Cover over Say a little prayer Move on ;-)
^nsmoke Posted November 26, 2005 Posted November 26, 2005 The voices scream " Put that in your pipe and smoke it!!!" Another shameless post increase
smokeswirl Posted November 29, 2005 Posted November 29, 2005 if it where a rare cigar or larger I would fix but its too small. Hummm where else have I heard that....?:-D
hazleem Posted November 15, 2008 Author Posted November 15, 2008 Since there are many wise and experienced members here :-D , looking for some advice. This is a Partagas Shorts (from a cab of 50 - not from ROB) box dated ABR05, picked up by a friend at the airport. Of course you never get the same quality control that I'm sure we all take for granted from Cigar Czar ;-) . Anyway, what do you guys think? Can this be saved? -Haz-
