dB69 Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 For some reason I don't have many cigars to choose from at the moment, but neither of these are not bad, I suppose. Hmmm... I think EL would do fine on this Sunday evening. I hope I will get far away with a little help from Mike Oldfield and Coca-Cola. The scent as cold is strong and some kind of a sour tobacco. Cutting the cigar with scissors. The draw is a little tight, which is very nice. Ignition. Familiar Partagas taste, slightly nutty and strong tobacco. Some mild cream on the background also. Very earthy taste. Toasted bread. Feels like I am lying on moss in a dark forest. Pepper starts to crawl in - but no, it doesn't last very long. Toasted tobacco and small amount of toffee. Uneven burn disturbs me a little. Some meaty moments. Toasted tobacco. Nothing much happens in a very long time... boring... Now we hit the ligero! The cigar has strong urge to quit burning, but I don't let it to. Pepper. Dark roasted coffee. Strong toastiness. Smoky cream. Tar and cream. Some smoked wood. Salty tobacco. On the background there is something sweet with cream. Nothing happens again... I'm waiting... Some greasy perfume tries to get itself on top, but fails. Two hours has gone and I think we're done. Strong tobacco as an aftertaste, which doesn't last very long though. Interesting is that normally we split cigars in thirds, but somehow afterwards I'd like to split this to fifths. The flavourprofile of the cigar reminds me a lot of 898V. Unfortunately it is not my favourite Party, but 898 lovers would love this, I bet. From another point of view this cigar didn't have a story to tell, because it quite didn't have a soul. It was just a good product like D4 happens to be nowadays. I had very high expectations for this cigar, but they were not fullfilled. A good cigar, but not very special. Not worth of it's high price anyhow.
shrink Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 An excellent review. I like these cigars, although they have gone through some changes in the past few years. They were better a couple of years ago. I'm hoping that they finally settle into a profile with somewhat greater complexity. It's been at least six months since my last one; sounds like it's time to pull 'em out and sample one.
CanuckSARTech Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 Nice review, well put together, even if the cigar didn't live up to your hopes. Thanks for sharing.
thechenman Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 I recently had a different experience with the Partagas Serie D No. 1 EL 2004. A few weeks back I sparked one of these babies at the FoH NY get-together. I am happy to say that my experience was entirely pleasureable. Then again, I'm a big fan of the 898V. That could be why. It was not quite as hearty as many Partagas, but definitely had the marcas distinctive flavor profile. It was a medium bodied smoke. I remember it being extremely creamy, slightly peppery with some notes of earth, and coffee. At times there was a slight sweetness to it as well. The burn was fantastic as attested to by the fantastic construction of this cigar. Best cigar I had smoked in quite some time actually. Sorry to hear that you did not derive the same pleasure from your smoke.
ckearns Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 Sorry to hear it turned out to be a disappointment. Your photos were great and chronicled your session nicely. Of your three remaining cigars, what will you have next? I'm looking forward to another review. Cheers.
dB69 Posted March 7, 2011 Author Posted March 7, 2011 This was certainly not a bad cigar, no way. It was a good cigar, but I expected it to be perfect, which it wasn't. It just did not give me the "wow-effect" like for example Coronas, Lonsdales, SdCs and Shorts mostly do. As I mentioned that this cigar should be divided in five parts when reviewing, I would say that 1/5 and 4/5 were the best parts of it. Those parts were very delicious. ...It was not quite as hearty as many Partagas, but definitely had the marcas distinctive flavor profile. It was a medium bodied smoke. Unfortunately I did not write anything down, maybe next time when I get the rest of my cigars rested enough after deep freezing them. I moved them back to humidor today and they seem to be very well, but that's another story..
strayvector Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 Just had one a couple of days ago and thoroughly enjoyed mine. I had about 2 inches left when the lounge I was at closed up shop. Hung with a friend outside the shop for another half hour just so that I could nub the damn thing.
Mr Peales Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 I had one two weeks ago, I would have to agree with dB69. Initially some Partagas flavors; then not much happened for a very long time, mild, nondescript, boring, very unPartagas. A little bit of something during the last ten minutes but by then it was to little to late.
Mr.T Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 I've got 2/3 of a box left of these and each one has been really good. When I open the box I swear I can literally taste orange /cherry chocoloate truffles.
