I collect cigar bands. I think they're pretty. I have the bands of just about all the cigars I've ever smoked, all tumbled together in a tall glass vase, which I position as a decorative element in my living quarters. I find this objet d'art d'tabac oddly soothing.

It even offers the tiniest solace when a cigar is a beast and a horror, which happens too often these days. Then, I carefully remove the band before tearing apart the offending piece of crud to look for that goddam plug, or where else that sickening beetle wandered about in there, or whatever it was that made of that cigar an unsmokeable abomination, a betrayal of trust, a waste of money, a soul-searing disappointment and a disgrace to its face. Then its band can join its brothers in the vase to serve a more merciful purpose.

*I used to dutifully keep & collect my cigar bands years ago. I had about 9 tall empty food containers of cigar bands from my smoked habanas. Then when I moved out of state I invited my cigar smoking friend over and gave him ALL of those containers and all the hundreds of empty cigar boxes I had stuffed in closets & rooms. Nowadays, I just keep the one or ones that have made quite an impressive impression upon me!
