DarkSky Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 I'm going down in April (from Canada) for a wedding, so it's in Varadero (yah I know..) and we're staying at a somewhat no frills resort: The Tuxpan. The online brochure on some travel site said they have a cigar store there, but I'm not sure whether it's trustworthy. Has anyone been to the Tuxpan? (the more I read about it the more I'm dreading going... it seems to be geared a LOT towards Italians (almost primarily)). The person getting married there is Italian. I'm not. I'm hoping I'm not wasting a grand in trip expenses + about the same in spending money. Anyway who cares, it's the cigars that are important. So if anyone has stayed at the Tuxpan and can report on the cigar situation it would be muchos appreciated!
clavettm Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 Hi, I'll also be in Varadero, at the Serenis La Salina, from the 18th to the 25th of April. All cigar stores I found on the resorts in Varadero are Caracol state run stores and storage of puros can be iffy. Your best bet is to take the double-decker buses for 5$CUC into town (you can hop on and off as much as you like during the day) and go to one of the LCDH found on 1st Avenue at Calle 31st, 39th or 63th. There is also an LCDH at Plaza America. In my view, the best LCDH is the one at Calle 63th and it has a Casa del Ron just beside it. As for prices of cigars, you can check this list to have an idea of current selling prices in Cuba. On the rum, check the prices at the airport when you arrive because prices in town can be higher. For ex: Legendario, Elixir de Cuba (a delicious sweet rum) was 6$CUC at the airport (before Customs), 8$CUC at the Duty Free and 12$CUC at the Casa del Ron and at the hotel. Mind you the Casa del Ron will have all the selection you may want so shop wisely. Also, if you want to save a few bucks, change your $Can in $CUC at the airport (there is an exchange both called CADECA in the departure lobby) as the hotels charge a few % markup. Current exchange rate in a CADECA should run around 1.10. Have a good trip, Mike
JohnnyC Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 I been to Varadero three years in a row but never stayed at the Tuxpan. I agree with HCSll that Calle 63th LCDH has your best selection of Cigars in VAaadero. I have purchased from them all three years I went and never had a problem. As far as taken the bus for 5 CUC I found that it was an issue waiting to catch the bus. I waited sometimes over an hour waiting for it only to find it packed and unable to pick us up. This year my wife and I took a cab Downtown from my resort ( Iberostar Varadero ) and it cost me about 10 CUC. It all depends how valuable your time is to you. I would definitely take the cab again if I go. I hope this helps DarkSky.
tdlfoto Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 Or rent a scooter from your resort and move around at your own will. Agreed on the LCDH store at Calle 63.
