Traz Posted October 30, 2010 Posted October 30, 2010 It’s been months since my last cigar. True story. Dilemma: Ordered a new humidor (300 count) last Thursday, and it took them a week to tell me (after I emailed them) that they ‘might not have stock’. Might not. I would have bought it from overseas in the first place had I known I would be waiting this long for nothing, but the idea was to have it within a couple of days. Long story short, had to cancel the order and won’t be dealing with them again. However, it’ll probably take two weeks to get it from overseas, and I’ll most assuredly have 50~ cigars that will certainly not fit in my current humidor by then. I should have waited until I had the new one, but I didn’t expect to be dealing with morons. In any case, what’s the best thing I could do with these homeless cubans which may very well have to wait a week for their new mansion? We’ve got some big plastic containers, but they’re hardly truly ‘airtight’. If I were to wrap them (still boxed) in glad-wrap//etc and throw them in would that be better than nothing? Once I have the new humidor ready would they eventually recover from the poor humidity? In the best case scenario, I’ll end up with a box of 25 + 10 that will have nowhere to go.
investandprosper Posted October 30, 2010 Posted October 30, 2010 Go buy a cheap tupperware container and keep them in that during the interim with some beads. Should be able to pick one up for a few bucks. Good luck!
rckymtn22 Posted October 30, 2010 Posted October 30, 2010 or a plastic cooler. That is what I use, cheap and stores about 10 boxes.
fugwumpy Posted October 30, 2010 Posted October 30, 2010 one of the 5 or 7 day coolers should do the trick until your humidor is in and properly seasoned. If you use something that's not airtight, I'd suggest plastic wrap and foil. The foil should have a much lower water vapor permeability. a cooler and some silica beads are a great backup if you run out of space in your humidor. I actually keep all mine in coolers and have a small humidor for dry boxing
cigcars Posted October 30, 2010 Posted October 30, 2010 *Would you object to ordering a humidor on Ebay? They've got great specials for excellent prices - and for sizeable humidors...and they're NOT all made in China!
investandprosper Posted October 30, 2010 Posted October 30, 2010 Most of the eBay humidors are made in China. Do a search on eBay, and then do a search on AliBaba. You'll see many of the same humidors, even though the sellers on eBay claim they are genuine.
bobsled Posted October 30, 2010 Posted October 30, 2010 I have always had good luck with tampa humidors.
Traz Posted October 31, 2010 Author Posted October 31, 2010 Well I've got plenty of spare (small-sized) eskies/coolers lying around, so I guess that combined with the cling-wrap + foil idea is the best I can do. No luck with the beads though; quick Google search netted either ridiculous prices for a temporary solution or international locations; hence I'd still be waiting a good week or two which defeats the purpose. >_@ Ebay would be useless to me at this stage since there aren't any from sellers in Australia that match what I'm after. I've got a perfect provider already, it's just that it wouldn't ship until Monday and will probably take two solid weeks to get here. Very unfortunate situation. A simple 'out of stock' image or an email within 24-48 hours telling me they were out of stock would have saved me all this trouble.

But, all you can do is move on at this point, and take your business elsewhere. For a week or two, just put them in a cooler for now. Depending on your RH where you live, and at this particular time of year, you could almost just leave them sitting out for only that week or so. Another option could be to put them in giant ziplock bags, the big huge freezer bags, which you can buy at your grocery store. But, for just those two small boxes, any airtight container (bag, cooler, etc.) is more than adequate for that short amount of time.
jay8354 Posted November 1, 2010 Posted November 1, 2010 If it is from Czar and they have not delivered, call Lisa and move all your orders to the online lockers. Best solution until the humi arrives. If it is not from Czar, buy an esky and store the boxes in there temporary with some florist foam. Of course, you will need to monitor the RH.
Traz Posted November 4, 2010 Author Posted November 4, 2010 Humidor hasn't even shipped yet, as it appears I'm dealing with amateurs yet again. Two days with no reply to an email I sent, so I either have to maintain patience again or let them know how I feel, if you catch my drift. My box of Monte #4's arrived the other day, too. Poor lovelies. Hope they can survive potentially 2.5~ more weeks in the esky//cooler. Thanks for the replies, everyone. Just not my lucky cigar-day, so to speak.
GAZHOG Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 Some very esteemed members here with storage for the ages...Might make your mind at ease and provide some room for more acquisitions... http://www.friendsofhabanos.com/forum/inde...howtopic=102790
hakamo0o Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 a "Lock 'n Lock" container will do just fine. It is airtight and will keep ur sticks fresh and it is very cheap
armedak Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 I think you will find that if you really get serious about this hobby you will need much more storage than a small humidor will provide. Go get yourself a nice large cooler and some beads (unscented kitty litter beads work well for a fraction of the cost), and you will have quality cost effective storage for many more cigar purchases. It may not be pretty, but if you really want to age your own stock without breaking the bank on a massive humidor it really is mandatory. I would recommend spending your money on quality stock and not fancy humidors.
thechenman Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 If all else fails...start smoking them...or you could ship them off to me.
