MIKA27 Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 Hi all. Well, in light of the successful iPad thread, a statement was made from myself along with a few others about FOH having their very own iPad App. Prez thinks it's a good idea however did raise the gauntlet and ask what would we have it do? That's a very good question... Well, I for one would love it to have some sort of menu system where one could scan the vast range of Cuban cigars and read up on 'a' cigars profile and rating. Another would be the availability to all of the great cigar video reviews that are posted. My goodness, the list of possibilities could be endless! What say you all, have you any ideas to add and are there members out there that know how to develop apps?
Warren Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 I like the idea but in a lot of ways I already have that app on my iPad, it's called FOH and it sits on my home screen waiting for me to click on it. And that's where this app idea gets difficult. So much of what we would want is already on FOH. Perhaps it needs to be some kind of refined down quick reference tool that could guide you through things like cigar history and how to build a good collection.

What say you all, have you any ideas to add and are there members out there that know how to develop apps? Wrote this in the other thread, but there is tones of cigar apps out there. I am using Mobile Stogie, which has a lot of information and also several humidor databases. You find it here: http://itunes.apple.com/app/mobile-stogie/id309242012?mt=8 (I have no commercial interest in this app, dont know who developed it, dont care... If a FOH app should be developed it has to bring something new, something that makes is special, just develop and app because it can be done is not a good idea (according to me) cheers
gersonmorelli Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 Love the idea... Cigar listings, ratings and reviews. Humidor database. Access to the forum, video reviews, and the possibility to order directly from the app would also be nice. Are the current apps available too much focused on Non-Cuban? A Cuban cigar only dedicated app would be awesome! A FOH app would be a great tool to further promote its great community and services. For better and for worse...
Warren Posted June 12, 2010 Posted June 12, 2010 The app could also bring more people to the forum through a built in link.
MIKA27 Posted June 12, 2010 Author Posted June 12, 2010 The app could also bring more people to the forum through a built in link. Exactly.
FlyingFossil Posted June 12, 2010 Posted June 12, 2010 Thats a great idea I hope it come to fruition ... I do have a couple of things/ideas in mind maybe some of you guys can coment if they are any good 1) the reviews should be done by FOH members so there is no bias towards the results 2) maybe a view of the actual cigar as to compare if its a real or fake I know that this may increase the workings of the said app but it may help in the end to make a real good app After meeting a few of the member in Vic i have no doubt that this is something that will happen Great idea hope it gets up and runing cheers
Onsto Posted June 12, 2010 Posted June 12, 2010 It would be very easy to include a quick link daily / weekly / adhoc offer and instant purchase option for members too. Impulse purchases are good for business and would quickly pay for the development cost of the app.
Guest rob Posted June 12, 2010 Posted June 12, 2010 Sounds great... but dont see myself using it after the novelty wears off. (dont hate me... its just my honest opinion)

Impulse purchases are good for business and would quickly pay for the development cost of the app. Not to mention the cost of the app itself. The app shouldn't be free, it should cost a small one off fee. Many people may or may not want the app, that's fine, I too can just log on via the internet, but I am also a subscriber to many sites that have an iApp and they are ideal because they link you through the site super fast and they also offer additional content that you couldn't get from the site. (Its an added bonus for having the app). Lets not forget that in buying the app, you are supporting your forum. Each to their own people.
Guest rob Posted June 12, 2010 Posted June 12, 2010 Lets not forget that in buying the app, you are supporting your forum. I'm pretty sure Im already supporting the forum substantially. My missus can attest to that...
JoshMP Posted June 12, 2010 Posted June 12, 2010 It says 'anti apple users beware' but if FOH were to make an app could I suggest releasing it to the android app market as well? That way, rather than just iPhone users getting its benefits, people who use samsung's new phones, the google phone and a lot of the other smart phones on the market could also enjoy it. As an aside I am writing this using my blackberry bold so I am excluded either way

The statement 'Anti Apple users beware' was directed to those who are completely against the technology and who wish to sway others opinions on looking at using it. You use the Android technology, that in itself is great, how do you find the applications?
JoshMP Posted June 12, 2010 Posted June 12, 2010 I don't, I use a blackberry bold which comes with its own set of, not particularly useful, apps. But my house mate is the samsung rep for my state and from playing with his phones I find the android os to be a nice mix of the fun/functionality of a decent set of apps like the iPhone has but with a more friendly os. The difference between android apps and iPhone apps is pretty much nil, it seems to me like if you can get it on an iPhone you can get It on android 90 percent of the time. With the way it is going now it's becoming more a "use the x phone because you like it" where before a lot of the draw power with the iPhone was the plethora of fun stuff you could do with the apps. I'm going to get myself one of the new Samsung Galaxy S phones because I love the idea of all the apps etc. and the Galaxy is just a phone I enjoy using.
JoshMP Posted June 12, 2010 Posted June 12, 2010 In regards to what should the app do it should be a mix of FOH and Czar. Something that combines what both sites have to offer in an easy to use way. IE: having the psp/hq/pe forums as both a forum and also a store-esque setting. So I'd see "we have a great box of psp Bolivar Royal Coronas -image- Click here to add to your shopping cart" that would be a winner for me. Ps: rob, got a psp box of bolivar royal coronas handy?
greatsmoke Posted June 13, 2010 Posted June 13, 2010 FOH could make use of the Tap A Talk app... some other stogie forums have started making themselves compatible... pretty good stuff. I believe it would also work for Apple, Blackberry and Android phone platforms. IDK, just a thought
