ChanceSchmerr Posted May 29, 2010 Posted May 29, 2010 Further to my other question about which box to choose - the reason they don't know the age of the RA 8-9-8s...is that there is no apparent box code! The pic they sent has just the varnished box - am I right in assuming that the code is normally on the cardboard box over the varnished box? Or is there a date code inside the varnished box? Who has a box of Ramon Allones 8-9-8 to help me out here? Lastly, if the date cannot be confirmed - should I still get the box? Thanks fellas!

Mine are OSU MAR 02. The date code should be on the cardboard box, so with out that, you may not find out. Do you trust the person/vendor? How bout seeing if they'll sell one to try...if you know the RA profile, you'll be able to tell if they are legit when you smoke one of those gems.

jacksfull Posted May 29, 2010 Posted May 29, 2010 Date code would be on the outer cardboard box, which apparently is lost in time. Seems to me it'd take a darn smart counterfeiter to know enough not to put a box code on the varnished box AND not include the cardboard outer. So, I don't think that's really the question. Given that the RA 8-9-8's were discontinued in 2002, I don't think the unkown date code would matter that much to me. Maybe you can get a little edge on the price because of it, but I'd still buy 'em either way. But then, they were one of my favorites when they were being made. Being produced in a certain year is no guarantee they'll be great... or lousy.
PigFish Posted May 30, 2010 Posted May 30, 2010 ... this is the way they used to look Chris. Even though I have seen boxes, I don't recall if the were Partagas or LGC's double date marked, I can't recall seeing it on a varnished bottom box like these. Mine have the date only on the cardboard. -R
Colt45 Posted May 30, 2010 Posted May 30, 2010 Mine have the date only on the cardboard. -R Piggy, are those short magnums? I find that truly offensive! Since you and Austin seem to have a large supply of the RA898, you guys know where to find me - OK, maybe not. Since I'm such a nice guy - OK, maybe not............
