El Presidente Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 A Question which I received today and answered but interested in your opinion. Describe the flavour differences between a Partagas 898 Varnished, a Partagas Serie Connaisseur no 1 and a Partagas Presidente?
Jimmy2 Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 898V - Old School strong sweet earthy flavors a meaty beefy cigar SC#1 -Overall Mild to Med Classic Partagas flavor spice and leather Presidente - Old school Partagas flavor pepper, leather and faint sweet notes for me a mild cigar..
Guest rob Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 Jimmy hit it perfectly. 898's are a weekly staple for me.
Colt45 Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 I generally agree with J's assessment. I've not tried the Presidente, but I feel the 898 and SdC1 share similar traits. To me the 898 is is more earthy, with the spice character more of pepper, with some leather. The SdC, more leathery, with sweet spices, some earthiness. For me both are on the full side of medium in body.
Mr Peales Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 Two of my favorites, along with the bulk of the Partagas line-up, well, what's left of it. 898: usually has rich flavors; all kinds of wood and all kinds of creamy leather, a dose of pepper, and sweet berry-like flavors, really-well balanced, complex, can be mild, medium or full. SdC#1: similar to the 898, and to my palette more earthy (somewhat coffee-like), and less sweet, the body of the smoke is heavier, the flavors don't seem as integrated(but still delicious) and at times more pronounced—almost sharp. Strong finish. These seem more 'old-school' to me than the 898s. Medium/full. Presidentes: I have only had a few and was never really moved to buy a box. More straight-forward less interesting earthy flavors, less complexity, last third is sort of harsh and nondescript, these would probably be much better with lots of age—like 7 years+. -P
