Colt45 Posted January 23, 2010 Posted January 23, 2010 More of an overall observation..... All "technical" aspects: (construction draw, burn ect.) Exemplary. Wrapper: Nice, deep colorado not overly oily, a bit toothy to the touch. Overall Taste Impressions: Central core of cedar, covered with a layer of sweet cream, wrapped in fruit. The fruit layer is not stewed, and not overly bright, but more toward the bright side. Throughout there is just the slightest suggestion of youthful "green-ness" on the tongue, but it really is just an integral element. Just on the light side of medium in body, fairly smooth and nearly fully integrated and balanced. Shows a bit of earth in the final third, but meanders it's way back to it's earlier overall profile. Finish is ever so slightly astringent, but again, I consider it an overall element of flavor / complexity. Have you ever had a cigar that simply made you happy while you smoked it? This fit that bill for me. To my palate pure Hoyo - showing the lineage to the double corona. Perhaps not for everyone, but for me, a real joy. If it holds true to my experiences with the DC, time witll smooth out the woody / astringent elements just a bit, bringing the sweet cream a little more to the fore. I'm very happy to have twenty three more. Score: An easy 91/92 Comments: At the risk of sounding the salesman..... for those members who might still be unsure or have misgivings about the Czar Crew- for me this box is a perfect example of what they do. I had an interest and made an inquiry. I was advised and a box chosen. And yes, I've only smoked a couple from this box, but I couldn't be happier. Personal experience over time tells me these will only get better - how much? No saying. To use a cliché - my trust in the Czar Crew (which they've surely and completely earned) - priceless. P.S. RA, please expedite my kickback check - I lost big on the ponies.
dochowl Posted January 23, 2010 Posted January 23, 2010 Thanks for the review Colt. This isn't one that I've considered picking up, but may try a few singles at some point.
Cubanface Posted January 23, 2010 Posted January 23, 2010 Skimming the forum, you don't rate many cigars too high. Must have been a very good cigar. Enjoyed the review.
bigfunkyg Posted January 24, 2010 Posted January 24, 2010 Quite Interesting. I have a box from 2001 that has never lived up to that billing. I have five left from the original box and would have figured they would have develped into somthing great at this point, but I smoked one last year and it has never fulfilled it potential. A bunch from the box had bad draw and poor construction. Mind you this box came direct from Cuba long before I knew about the Czar. I will smoke one again once summer comes and see if they finally have come around but I'm doubtful. Wish I could say I had the same experience though. G

G One thing to keep in mind about 2001 and pretty much every year after that to 2005 is the inconsistency. 2006 and beyond have been considered a new dawn in terms of quality and taste. That could be part of the reason. I would suggest giving the newer vintages a try...
thechenman Posted January 25, 2010 Posted January 25, 2010 Colt... How would you rate the HdM Churchill in comparison to the DC? Would be interested to hear if you have the insight. Thanks.

Keeping in mind that the DCs I've smoked (and still have one of) were from an '04 cabinet, and that I've smoked but two of the '07 churchills - I do find many similarities - quite similar, and happily so. I'll have to see what happens with these churchills, and would like to try another fairly soon. It's also just hit me that the churchills have already been in the box for nearly three years, which in this case seems to be a good thing.

I ordered a variety sampler of singles from Lisa back around Thanksgiving and in that package was an 08 HDM DC. It was just as described here in Colt's review. I smoked it on New Years Eve and was absolutely blown away. Best cigar that I smoked in 2009 hands down - and I smoke a lot of cigars. I expected the smoke to be a bit on the light side (although the wrapper was nice and dark with a bit of oil) but it was right on the line of medium to full bodied. Loved it. I looked on the HQ list and found a box of HDM DC's from 2008 and couldn't snap them up fast enough (there is a picture of the box on the "Hot Boxes" thread). I've only smoked one so far and it was superb. I recommend if you haven't tried one of the more recent versions to have the Czar crew pick you out an 07-08 and give it a go. I don't think you will be disappointed......
