Another cigar received in a care package courtesy of Professor Twain.

Construction: No anomalies. Good foot buch. Perhaps feels just a bit heavy.

Appearance: Dark colorado, moderate veining, leathery to the touch. Dry overall, but some oil near the head and on the cap.

Pre-light Aroma / Draw: Aroma of barnyard mixed with raisin fruit. Excellent draw with a light taste of cocoa powder.

Draw / Burn: Smooth luxurious draw, very good burn, excellent smoke volume.

Taste: Initial draws of mellow toasted tobacco with a dash of white pepper. This quickly darkens to a profile of cedar with herbal

hints and a tannic finish. Moved right into medium body. There is a sense of milk chocolate on the perimeter, but the somewhat

dirty finish keeps any true sense of flavor in check.

A bit of fruit, more herbal notes, with nice depth on the front and mid palate which gets broken up by the finish. Up to now, great

draw, burn, and smoke volume. I really get the sense that this is a very young cigar.

Herbal flavors continue to dominate, but are not sharp enough to be cutting or make me want to stop. Still some underlying milk

chocolate with some fruit rolled in. it's unbalanced and disjointed, but to be honest, I'm enjoying the skirmish.

Body remains medium, draw and smoke excellent, burn very good. Initial delivery is smooth, but from mid palate on the flavors

are grainy and off. Passed midpoint things smooth out just slightly, but it is what it is. It finishes up darker, greener, and black

pepper spicy.

In a nutshell, I found it to be a very youthful cigar in the thick of it's maturation - but I can almost see it's potential to be a very

good cigar. Only time will tell how that pans out.

Make it a corona gorda and knock down the price, and I'd be very tempted. Many thanks PT!

Score: I'll use the same method I used with the Secretos.

Flavor - 3/7

Complexity - 3/7

Performance - 3/3

Enjoyment - 2/3 - despite it being raw and wild, I found myself enjoying it.

Total - 11/20

I like your points scoring system Colt. In fact, I really like it.

My only suggestion is to change the allocation of how many points can be awarded for Enjoyment. I'd perhaps make it out of 5 (or whatever really).

I say this because it seems to lack a slight amount of 'precision' - if you rate 2 out of 3 you are saying you really enjoyed it.... but if you deduct one point point and rate it 1 out of 3 you imply it sucked.

But again, I like your system and am simply offering suggestion for possible improvement.

Rob, it is open to discussion, dissection, or dismissal. In one of the scoring/flavor/complexity threads, I mentioned that I

initially was not going to include the "enjoyment" category as it is the most subjective. But I think it worth having.

I agree that it is definitely worth having.

When I read or hear a review I really want to know what the smoker's enjoyment level was. I don't care if it was a complex cigar if the smoker didn't enjoy it.

Enjoyment is the sole reason I smoke.

Loved the review mate.

My experience with the Magicos is along the same lines. A little like a woman flirting .....but won't give you a kiss. Strangely hollow experience....potential sure....but hollow overall.

I would like to examine your rating system overall. Would love some feedback from other members. If agreed then we may incorporate it (with your permission of course  ) as our FOH rating system. We can call it the COLT20

Nice review.

I had a couple singles from the first release, lost them for a few months, then ended up smoking the in Santa Barbara at some stupid convention. And I REALLY enjoyed them. Surpisingly so, as I had not been overly impressed by the whole Cohiba maduro thing until then. But these, although too young and strong, had a very delicious dark chocolate character that I still remember vividly.

I always wondered why they were priced so closely to the Genios when they were appreciably smaller. But I actually realy liked the ones that I smoked.

I like your breakdown of score, but call me lame, I still like a 100 total point scale. More room for pinpointing, IMO.

Great to read your review Ross. Since I knew that you were too Old School to buy a box I was intrigued to read your reaction.

I too have found the few Magicos I have smoked to be disjointed. I do like the dark chocolate flavors but think that the Secretos show them off much better. Fun to think of different vitolas where these might be better displayed.

Oh the box code on this cigar was AGU AGO 07

Thanks for the review Colt and the interjection from the Professor, Rob & Pres. I have yet to smoke any of the Cohiba maduro smokes, not sure why. Well, yeah I do the costs probably more than anything. But besides that I have heard of many who had a hard time w/the particular flavoring of this group of cigars made by Cohiba, I guess I would fall into that category also. When I smoke a Cohiba there is a certain taste range that your expecting, and a chocolate maduro just doesn't seem right. Maybe I'm being a little shallow here, but that's my opinion. Thx again for the review.

Interesting that you say that. When I was still in school (ie had more time) I messed around with the 100 point scale (that CA uses, 15 construction/appearance, 25 burn, 25 flavor, and 35 for overall impression) only changed the final 35 points to overall enjoyment which took into account my company, what I was doing, the weather, my mood, physical condition etc . . . Granted I agree it is much more subjective, but at the same time find that my mood and what else going on around me tends to greatly affect my enjoyment of a cigar and should be weighted very heavily.

If I were to amend now i would prob go 100 point scale with 15 for appearance/construction, 20 for burn characteristics, 25 for flavor, 5 for potential (aging) and 35 on the subjective as mentioned above.

IN any case, thanks for the review!

Great review.

Whilst I have smoked quite a few Cohibas including the Maduro 5 secretos, I am yet to try the Magicos.

Cohiba Maduro 5 Magicos 2008

Hershey Bar colored wrapper with sand paper like grit on it, slick feeling

Ash was White/Grey and tight, ribbed and showed the speckles like the wrapper on it

Barnyard smell with pre draw

Flavors included Burnt crème(meringue), cocoa, raisins, pepper, chocolate

Burn was even, draw was nice and burn rate was medium fast

48 mins smoke time

Great spice/wood/crème in 1/3, 2/3 showed me some chocolate (think Kit-Kat bar)

Spicier in 2/3 with the chocolate

First 35-40 mins of the cigar was great!

Lots of smoke emitted from this cigar

9.2/10….I really enjoyed this one, only thing is the price $17/each
