Ghabanos Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 Is the word vintage used in a similar manner as with wine? Are there years where the vintage of the leaves is clearly better or where certain flavors are clearly present? On the flip side, are there years where the product is terrible? Is 2010 a good vintage? When can we tell?
maverickdrinker Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 Vintage is like wine as you have some good years and some bad years. IMHO, the cuban cigar industry is going through another 'golden age' period. Quality tobacco, great construction and very few plugged cigars. 2006, 07, 08 and 09 have all been great vintages. (bought some 2010 however, haven't smoked any yet) Take a look at the vintage thread that the prez started. Should give you an idea of people's thoughts on this.
Colt45 Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 Agreed that like any crop, some harvests will be better or worse than others. When it comes to Cuban cigars, something to keep in mind is that all the tobacco used in a cigar normally does not come from the same harvest year - three year aged ligero, two for seco, one for volado. Another thing to remember is that the box date is when the cigars were boxed.
bassman Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 On March 9, 2011, James Suckling opined 2011 was the best vintage for Cuban cigars in the last 10 years. Seems a little premature to me, but them I'm not James Suckling.
