I have recently decided to build a custom desktop humidor to fit 10 of my favorite sized cigars.

I want it to have a glass top as well.

Has anyone ever done anything like this? I've got so many questions... the main one being what kind of glass to get, and where to get it, along with where to get spanish cedar.

It's actually pretty difficult to figure these things out without the help of people who know what they're talking about. Cold calling woodshops and glass cutters are leading me down empty trails. I don't know why, but I am striking out.

If anyone has ever done anything like this, I'd love to talk to you about it.

Cheers

Here's one location I found in CT with a website called woodfinder. I would consider a glass top no thinner than a 1/4 inch, the thicker the better if you are going to set things on top. I remember walking in to the LCDH in Aruba it being like a jewelery store. They had the coolest center island display with a glass top and drawers on all sides. When I inquired about the cigars it was like they were showing me my new "Oris". Of course their prices were similar to swiss watches, but that was my first experience with Habanos.

Most of these places offer milling services, so if you don't have a planer, jointer, and tablesaw, they can perform most of that work for you. If you are unfamiliar with the process then you'll need to know that what you purchase is raw lumber and you need these machines to produce perfectly flat and straight finished stock. When I build humidors I take it one step further and season the raw lumber in my humidor/wine cellar first, so the moisture content of the stock will equalize with the room that it will reside. Doing so will eliminate the wood movement do to Relative Humidity fluctuations, resulting in a much more precise end product. Anyone that has wood floors will tell you what that means.
