Mel Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 There are no settings and the one feature any corn popper must have is circular flow of hot air. All of the news one I have seen blow up from the bottom and that will not roast the beans evenly. I use a French Press, grind with a Mazer Mini and rarely go into the second crack unless I am trying to accunetuate the body on an Indonisian bean. I like to keep the acidity up and preserve the varietal nuances at the lighter roast. I like the look of the oil on the bean but find the dark roast flavor to dominate on the beans of Africa, Yemen and Central America.

Essentialy you use a stir-crazy 6 quart popcorn popper base (with heating element disconnected), a top to a SO-2000 cooker ( www.sunpentown.com/paacforov.html ) and fashion a small metal spacer to seperate the two by a couple of inches. WORKS GREAT!, can do up to a pound easily with great control (better use barbeque gloves can get burned!)

If you dont want to roast your own...grind up some Miscela D'oro or Zicaffe and you will not be dissappointed. I drink 3 Americanos in the morning thru a Saeco Superautomatic. Can never go back to regular coffee now.

bolivr Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 Generally a local roast is better regardless of bean origin. That's why once folks have tried home roasting they never look back. In Melbourne we go to the Coffex factory in Brunswick. No beans are good if they have been roasted and then spend months in transit / store before you buy them.

If you're not roasting your own beans, there's lots of small boutique coffee roasters you can buy from. Make sure your beans are roasted and shipped same day if possible. I buy mine from Black Dog Coffee (blackdogcoffee.net). Great selection of single origin beans as well as a super dark roast blend.
