aavkk Posted August 4, 2008 Posted August 4, 2008 thanks for the review. I have not had any JL's and this is exactly the type of review I need to put them on the list. I have to ask though, how do you mean these are incomparable to the 07's? Is it a different blend or just more vibrant flavor definitiion with the same blend?
El Presidente Posted August 5, 2008 Posted August 5, 2008 Excellent review of an old favourite The 07's are smoking well and I have high hopes for them. There is simply a class from a 6 year old example which cannot be compared to.
Gryphon Posted August 5, 2008 Author Posted August 5, 2008 aavkk, just to clarify, I have not had any 07's yet. The experiance I had with the one box of 06's (OPU SEP 06) that is now history, was inconsistant. And I feel that that box of 06 did not have the potential to become brilliant in 5 years. I am about to dig into a NOV 06 box. Will be interesting to see how they compare.
Miami101 Posted August 5, 2008 Posted August 5, 2008 The JL with out the labels nice. I had this once smoke like a dream...
Gryphon Posted November 15, 2008 Author Posted November 15, 2008 Juan Lopez Seleccion No 2 RUC OCT 02 Box obtained June 2007 from Czar/ PCC Vintage Collection I took the opportunity to grab a cab of these, as I have always enjoyed the Seleccion 2, and the chance to get some with 5 years of age was an exciting opportunity. I actually smoked one of these over the weekend. All I can say with about 12 left from the 25, I have not been disappointed. I find them very attractive. Perhaps it’s the bandless look when you open the SLB or it’s that they are very well constructed, uniform colouring and smooth wrappers, all in a medium chocolate hue. On opening the cab, you can smell the age, there is a solid clean and smooth tobacco and barnyard aroma Cut the cap to find an approachable draw which was not all too easy. It was just fine. Taste was mature, solid and together. The JL 2 lit with ease, producing substantial smoke from the start. No harshness, bite, no aggressive in your face behaviour. Just an elegant presentation of what the JL 2 can offer. The flavours were dominated by lots of butter and complex tobacco. Some wood. As it progressed a little spice was noticeable, but never upsetting the mature and elegant presentation of this aged smoke. Although it was not a roller coaster of flavours, it was still able to hold my attention with its solid maturity and quality tobacco. Its mild body is a bit deceiving because it’s no lightweight in the flavour department. Nice to smoke a milder cigar that is still a complex cigar. Truly a fine cigar with a smoking experience that you wish could go on forever. Rob was certainly spot on with his recommendation of this 02 JL 2. I have even referred to some of them as pure brilliance in my tasting comments. I have not smoked any from 07 yet, but my 06 box which is now finished was not even comparable.
