For Those Who Don\'t Have Temp Controlled Cabinets

What do you do to keep the temperature down? Just find the coolest spot in your house? At the moment, I have other things I'd rather spend ~$3400 on than a humidor, so I want to know if I have any other options.

I keep my humidors in my basement. The temperature is fairly consistent throughout the year, and when it does go up or down, the changes are gradual - no abrupt spikes. Luckily it's also not too damp, or too dry, either.

I keep wine there for the same reason.

Having said that, I'd love to have a small walk-in some day.

Living in the south were basements aren't that common, I will own a temp. controlled cabinet within a year. That's my goal! :-D Right now I just pray that an outbreak does not occur! ;-)

STays in the lower family room. I just keep ac on 70 and same when heat is needed. Almost woth the temp controlled humi, for bills get way out of hand in both seasons

I'm in the same situation, but even at 70 the the humidor rarely goes below 72. Usually hovers at 74, so I'm also praying that eggs don't hatch.

I have an Avallo cabinet and keep the temp in my home at 70 degrees. Yes, the a/c bill is high, and yes the wife is always freezing...and yes, I tell her its easier to get warmer than it is to cool off.;-)

Will be getting a cooled cabinet soon, then once I build my house its a walk-in.

I find if you keep your a/c down to a reasonable temp, and dont put the humi on an outside wall, you should be ok. My humi never gets above 73 and is usually consistant at 70-71.

I have an Avallo 1200 that stays around 70-74 during the day and now down to 66 at night as fall gets into full swing. I also have some boxes in a 120 qt cooler in one of our guest bedrooms. Its a cooler part of the house...it is always 70 or under...even in the middle of summer when the reast of the house is around 74-76

I'd love to have a very nice cooled cabinet but the cooler is working out nice keeping the temps down in the guest bedroom.

Basement for me.

It's never above 70 and never above 66. The RH is usually between 57 and 62% down there too.

Got the same problem. Since I am living in an apartment, so it is a nightmare.

Going to get a Wine Storage Cabinet and converting it to a Cigar Cab instead. Cheaper than the $3400 Humidor.

I just e-mailed Avallo to see if they will sell me a cooling retrofit kit since they offer it in the humis now. I am waiting for a reply and will post if the kit is available.

I think the biggest problem about retrofitting an existing humidor with a cooling system would be the matter of insulation. I'm guessing that without proper insulation, I think there would be a great degree of temperature fluctuation.

Hey jay, let me know what wine fridge you decide on. I've been thinking of going down that path, but I haven't found a suitable one yet. Which type of refrigeration is the one which condenses a lot of the humidity out of the air?

Compressor wine coolers will pull humidity from the air while thermoelectric coolers will not. I know avanti has a 28 count thermoelectric wine cooler.

Jmh Avallo uses a thermoelectric cooling device and it never gets above 85f, without the air conditioning on, so i would have to think that not much insulation would be needed for only a 15 degree difference in temperature. I will do a little more research. It also helps to be an electrician with low-voltage control knowledge.

Sorry for the late reply. Been kinda busy at work.

Anyway, firstly there are 2 types of wine cabinets - Those that are Wine Storage Cabinets and Wine Fridge.

Storage Cabs are Temp and Humidity controlled. They are great to use as a Humidor as well. Since you are able to digitally change the temp and humidity for cigars instead. They are as have been mentioned before these are usually thermoelectric coolers. I have yet to see one that is cheap enough for my budget in OZ.

The other is a Wine Fridge. They are as per their name - A fridge for cooling wine. They are not great but they are very cheap. But needs a bit of work to convert it since you need to make sure that you can reset the Temp to 21C/70F. After that you will need to find a humidification system.

Haier now makes a wine cabinet that is temperature and humidity controlled. There is a 40 and 50something bottle model in their afficionado series. I havent seen them around yet, but they might be worth checking out. I think the 40 bottle model is around 400 dollars.

I store in my office. Never above 73. But then again, I'm the boss.......;-)
