El Presidente Posted October 7, 2005 Posted October 7, 2005 It has been three years now that I have ditched the beer and changed to my daytime drink of choice: Johnny Walker Black Label and Soda in a tall glass. I have also developed a taste for scothc neat and am looking to purchase some bottles of ultra smooth scotch to be drunk neat. Give me your top 3?
Mikey Posted October 7, 2005 Posted October 7, 2005 Bowmore 17 y/o ---- a smooth Islay? You bet! Glenmorangie 12 y/o portwood finish --- Costco had it on special for a while...I drank a lot of their bottles:-D A little sweet, but oh so smooth. The Macallan 18 y/o ---- what can you say?I think Macallan are at their best at this age.The finish just goes on and on.... You've got me thirsty, but I'm laying off the scotch til my cold has blown over.:-( Cheers!:-D
novasurf Posted October 7, 2005 Posted October 7, 2005 I'm a real newbie on this topic. Winter is coming here in the northeast. There's only so much Tanqueray Ten i can drink. I look forward to your answers.
Bill Hayes Posted October 7, 2005 Posted October 7, 2005 I purchased the Johnny Walker sample box duty free on my way back from a holiday. It had Blue, Gold, Black and Single Malt in small bottles. The blue is awsome. But I liked the Gold label. Kind of honey and apparently you pop the bottle in the freezer for a bit and drink it neat chilled. I reckon it'd go well with a Trini Robusto Extra. I found an article in an Epicure cigar mag that matched scotches to cigars. Here's the lowdown according to them: Siglo 6 - Lagavulin 16 years, Sir Winston Talisker 10 years, Trin Rob Extra - Glenkinchie 10 years, Monte A Chivas 18 years, Lusitania - Cutty sark 25 years, Boli coronas gigantes - Cragganmore 12 years, Monte 2 - Oban 14 years, Punch churchill - Dalwhinnie 15 years, Cuaba Diademas - Sprinbank 12 years 175 anni, Partagas 8-9-8 - Campbelltown Loch 25 years, Hoyo Piramide - Putachieside 12 years, Esplendidas - Glenfarclas 1954, Cohiba Robustos - Edradour ltd ed 30 years, Partagas D1 EL - Isle of Jura 16 years, Partagas D4 - William Grant Rare 25 years, Monte Edmundo - Famous Grouse 15 years, Hoyo DC - The Arran Malt, Ramon Allones Gigantes - The Macallan select reserve 1946, Hoyo petit robusto - J&B reserve 15 years, Don Alejandro Vegas Robaina EL - Johnnie Walker Blue, R&J Exhibition 2 - Whyte & Mackay 30 years, Partagas Piramide - Benromach 25 years, R&J robusto - Bruichladdich legacy 1966 36 years. I haven't tried any but I like the sound of the Lagavulin (Islay sigle malt with a strong aroma of peat, iodine. Smokey on the palate with salty nuances) or the Isle of Jura (Single malt with sweet, floral aroma and hints of ginger. The palate is fruity with notes of honey, lightly citric, with a very long finsh). But then if you match these to to the cigars, you'll figure out my two fav stoggies at the moment. So you can take all that with a grain of malt. :-D
argon345 Posted October 7, 2005 Posted October 7, 2005 Now your talking, Rob!!! One of my all time favorites, Chivas Regal. While a blend it is still a damn fine scotch to enjoy neat!! I recently finished a bottle of Oban 14yr that was gifted to me, it was quite tasty There is always the JW green label. Many steps up from the black label!! And my all time favorite to date: The Macallan 15 or 18 yr. They are damn fine!!! Man now i need to step out and have a glass of Macallan and a smoke:-D ENJOY!!

1f1fan Posted October 7, 2005 Posted October 7, 2005 Macallan (enjoying some 18 yo now) Lagavulin Laphroig 10 yo in your face & the 15 for a more rounded complex dram
idesign Posted October 7, 2005 Posted October 7, 2005 Not big on the scotch, but I do enjoy a nice bourbon. Preferably Woodfords Reserve...
GoatLocker Posted October 7, 2005 Posted October 7, 2005 Love the Macallan 18, smooth as silk. JW Blue is nice, but there are better Single Malts to be had cheaper.
GoodTimes Posted October 7, 2005 Posted October 7, 2005 » Now your talking, Rob!!! » » One of my all time favorites, Chivas Regal. While a blend it is still a » damn fine scotch to enjoy neat!! » I'll second the Chivas Regal. That is the only beverage I drink with my cigars. I drink it neat and it is very smooth with nice woody flavors. And, it is also affordable at $50.00 for a 1.75 ml bottle.

jay8354 Posted October 7, 2005 Posted October 7, 2005 Glenmorangie 12 yo portwood or tokay finish The Macallan 25 yo Glendronach 15 yo
strayvector Posted October 7, 2005 Posted October 7, 2005 I can only give you the three that are affordable to me since I can't afford those $150 bottles. Here's my list of affordable faves: The Macallan Cask Strength Bowmore Darkest Highland Park 18 year old All of the above can be had for around 50-60 USD, but if you want to splurge give the Glenfiddich Havana Reserve 21 year old a try.
TR Posted October 7, 2005 Posted October 7, 2005 » Not big on the scotch, but I do enjoy a nice bourbon. Preferably Woodfords » Reserve... knob or makers for me....
harwellplant Posted October 7, 2005 Posted October 7, 2005 1. bookers. the best on the market right now, imo. incredible. 2. jd gentleman jack. i live only 1 hour from lynchburg. sentimental favorite, and most of what i drink. 3. turkey's russell's reserve. jimmy russell is a good friend. this is his cream of the crop.
Elric Posted October 7, 2005 Posted October 7, 2005 Nice mild scotch- Bunnahabhain 12. Excellent neat and it doesn't hurt going down.
Loki Posted October 7, 2005 Posted October 7, 2005 I'm not a scotch drinker. I'm partial to bourbon. I recently stayed at an B&B in Cape Cod. The owner, Bill had a collection of single malts that topped 350 bottles. It was really something to see. He was quite the eccentric drunk.
Ernie Posted October 7, 2005 Posted October 7, 2005 You want something nice to drink? A.H. Hirsch 16yr Pappy Van Whinkles 20yr Family Reserve Evan Williams yum yum
GoatLocker Posted October 8, 2005 Posted October 8, 2005 » Pappy Van Whinkles 20yr Family Reserve  Good stuff. Pretty much everything from Van Winkles is good.
Spud2 Posted October 9, 2005 Posted October 9, 2005 Ussually into the Tequilla when I drink, Cabo Wabo is my first choice. If drinking scotch, Glenlivet is my choice, neat or with a rock or 2.
benzig Posted October 9, 2005 Posted October 9, 2005 Glenmorangie burgundy woodfinish Glenfiddich 18yo Glenlivit 18yo http://www.whiskeyexperience.com.au/booknow.php

El Prez, Just got back from a month overseas. I was in Scotland at the end of my Trip. If you can find any in Oz, I recomend a Single Malt by the distillery of Talisker. It is from the Isle of Skye, and is almost a Cognac of a whiskey, I drank copious amounts of it whilst I was there. Also Laproaig (Check Spelling) that was a nice Single Malt. I am also partial to the Glenfiddich 12-18year. But my new number one is a Talisker, I will bring you in a sample if you will find me a cigar to match it! Ross...
habanolover Posted October 11, 2005 Posted October 11, 2005 My favorite is the Balvenie (sp?) 21 y.o. single malt...like honey in a bottle. Carries well over the rocks but really knocks tha socks off neat!! The 10 & 15 y.o.'s are not bad either.
harwellplant Posted October 11, 2005 Posted October 11, 2005 you guys DO realize that most scotch barrels are just the used, cast-off bourbon barrels, DON'T YOU? scotch is just white lightening soaked in spent wood. (that never gets anything started, lol).
lfg2nrg Posted October 12, 2005 Posted October 12, 2005 I gotta go with the Glenmorangie 12 y/o portwood finish
