» Has anyone heard of or had experience with Pelo de Oro?

Fabled Cuban tobacco. The genetics exist in many of todays strains in use (Sancti-Spiritus 96 being one). Highly susceptible to Blue Mold and Pata Negra.

I was told it is still grown today but in essentially test fields. May be right or wrong.

Felipe Gregorio makes a NC based on the Pelo de Oro seed (or at least a strain of it). Here’s a write up of it from his website: “The secret behind Pelo de Oro is the wrapper, a rare leaf grown from an elusive Cuban seed. Known as Pelo de Oro, Felipe grows this wrapper in the fertile soils of Costa Rica, giving the tobacco a wonderful, oily sheen and hefty doses of heady, hearty flavors.”

I’ve smoke the cigar but I don’t remember it being anything memorable.

Pelo de Oro = "golden hair"

Cool mention in a Forbes article:

What other strands are currently being used? As well as wrappers currently being used?

Thanks Rob!

...well... I think you all should know that in many spanish speaking countries "pelo de oro" are called the hairs which supposedly grow in the hands of teenagers when they do to much of the marimba (masturbate).

I'm definitely not smoking anything with that name.
