Colt45 Posted January 8, 2008 Posted January 8, 2008 I acquired a dozen or so singles a couple of years back and have been smoking them sparingly since. Flavor wise, they have been a mixed bag - some have been very lackluster, some have been delicious. This one fell somewhere in between, in that the flavor was there, but was out of harmony. This sample was a deep colorado with a distinct oily sheen. A rather thick, bumpy wrapper, that lent itself to a flowery burn. Excellent draw and smoke volume. It started with a black pepper kick and rich tobacco taste that was earthy rather than sweet. A bit of leather, and flavors of cherry that I taste with these from time to time. But the overriding element was a sharp acidity on every puff that lingered on the finish. It was not a totally unpleasant cigar, but the discord was enough to be annoying. Medium full in body throughout. In my opinion, the CG, CE, PC, CJ, even the immensa and RC are much more representative of the marque than these have been for me. I have to admit that it bothers me a bit that this batch wears the Bolivar band. 84.
BigSlick Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 Do you know if they were early ot late 05 BBF's?
Colt45 Posted January 9, 2008 Author Posted January 9, 2008 » Do you know if they were early ot late 05 BBF's? Sorry Slick, I've lost track of most of my singles dates. How about me being a real help and calling them mid '05 :-D
greenpimp Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 I have a cab of these from 2005 (and another from 2004) that are fairly useless. As you noted, almost an insult to the Bolivar name. Bland and nondescript. This used to be my favorite cigar and frankly I miss it.
Quint Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 Maybe the '06s will return this marca to its old glory. I have a box of 06s that are pretty good. Still young but definitely have the Bolivar taste profile.
gyosa Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 my experiences w/ 3 cabs of nov 06's have been excellent ..... just got a cab from jan 07 that are some of the darkest (almost maduro ) and oily-est boli's i have ever seen ... haven't smoked one of those yet , but i have very high expectations for them .... personally , i think they HAVE returned to their old days of glory ...
Moglman Posted January 10, 2008 Posted January 10, 2008 After this thread, I had to try one. SVF MAR 05. The construction was pretty good, but had some soft spots. For the first inch or so, the predominant taste to me was a soapy floral flavor. I was happy to get past that. The rest of the cigar was really good, with leather, pepper and a little sweet, lots of smoke but only medium to light body. The final third was the best part of the cigar, when it finally went from medium to medium plus. While good, it reminded me why this isn't a go to Boli.
El Presidente Posted January 10, 2008 Posted January 10, 2008 06 better than 05. I have seen some lovely 07's but have not smoked any recently as they feel very wet. I though BBf made a decent comeback in 06 production. I have had many more good ones than ordinary ones. Some were extraordinary. You still come across some cardboard tasting examples but thankfully it is becoming the exception and not the norm.
