I just got a box of Monte #4's and as I was looking over the box I noticed that the green warranty seal has another seal stacked on top of the other. I contacted the vendor about it today and haven't recieved a response yet and was looking for opinions.

The two seals were stacked almost perfectly. I just happend to notice a little corner looked odd and I started to peel it and their was another seal right behind it.

Is one an XY or XX serial number?

I don't have a computer at home and I am at work right now. I will look when I get home and post my findings tomarrow.

If they are then it is the standard proceedure for all boxes checked by Habanos s.a at the warehouse. They put another seal over the original starting with XX or XY.

The LCDH at Guadalavaca had their own supply of seals and used them on occasion to re-seal boxes.

What he said.

There might also be a stamp on the bottom that says Revisado, or Controllado on the bottom.

Aha! That's the word, Revisado. I couldn't quite make it out on a box I bought in Cuba.

It had a date stamp that appears to be 2000 and stamped underneath was Revisado and possibly another date but all very faint. I'll try and photograph it when I get home this evening but it maybe too faint unless the camera lens, a Karl Zeiss is better than my own which now have a cataract.:-)

The warranty seals are somewhat dark green and the top one the serial # IL 102207 and the bottom seal # IC 088101

The box code is PUT JUN 06

I thought it was odd that when you first open the box their was no cedar on top of the cigars. What was their is the yellow fold over paper from Montecristo then the wax paper card from Habanos and then a strip of wax paper across the cigars about 1 1/2" wide all the way across the cigars. The second row did have a piece of cedar on top of the cigars and it had a curved finger notch.

The bands are a milk chocolate color and are glossy but, no raised printing on it. The bands were all in the same spot across the box.

The cigars were dark to light (very slight color difference if any) from left to right. They are all the same size both ring and length. Most of the cigars had a clear triple cap but, their was a few that I wasn't 100% sure of.

I know that I should give them some time to rest before smoking them but, I couldn't resist. They were in transit for 11 days with only 1 day of rest. I only smoked a Monte #4 twice before and I am a newbie and don't have the most refined palate. The cigar burned very evenly and had a nice grey ash. At first the cigar was drawing very tight but, opened up somewhat after the first 1/2". The cigar didn't support a very long ash but, broke off in nice 3/4" chunks that didn't break apart in the ash tray. Also, for as tight as the cigar drew it had a fair amount of smoke.

The taste seemed a little off to me and I couldn't detect any distinct flavors. That could have been from not letting them rest after getting them.

When I was finished with the cigar I cut it open and found that it seemed that the cigar was made from whole tobbacco leaves.( keep in mind that I have no experience cutting a cigar open) Their was no stems or anything else that seemed out of place.

The only reason that I placed this in the suspect forum is because of the 2 stickers, the cedar that I think should be there, and the taste seemed a little off, and I just didn't get that warm fuzzy feeling that I usually get with a box of cubans. Instead I am somewhat skeptical.

Tell me what you think.

Matt3 -

If I'm not mistaken, boxes of Monte 4's don't have a top cedar piece - just the flap of yellow paper...and 1 on the second layer. For what it's worth, I've seen authentic boxes w/ 2 stickers that did not have xx or xy.

Do you trust your source or was the purchase a shot in the dark?

The purchase was a shot in the dark.:-|

At least my mind is somewhat at ease about the cedar and the sticker. The taste seemed a little off but, I'll let the cigars rest for a couple of weeks and try them again. Hopefully it was just the 11 days of transit that muddled the taste.

* Second seals outside of the Habanos s.a XX XY are rare these days but it still does occur. More prevalent in the past. I know that loose warrant seals are sometimes found in Mastercases. It may be a case of your vendor checking the box and applying a second seal over the top. I am speculating.

* No cedar top sheet to Monte 4's

*I think you need to let the remainder rest for 30 days prior to trying again.

If you can, post some pictures of the box and the cigars.

Do all LCDH's place a second seal on the boxes...I ask because I have 2 boxes of BGM's with one seal over the other and I peeled the top seal back very carefully and the codes were similar...both starting with IC4...no XX or XY which I've seen before on revisado boxes.

Rob...any ideas?

I have checked my LCDH boxes purchased in Havana over the last few years. 2 of the 12 have stickers over the top.

Ken has more boxes than I from LCDH's in Cuba and I will get him to check his stock. He is offline at the moment as his computer has crashed.

Revisado is where Habanos checks boxes. The date of the Revisado stanp is is when the boxes were opened...checked for quality and re-sealed.

The "Revisado" is often used on say Lancero's or a group of cigars which have had known construction problems or complaints as well as cigars that have been sitting in the Habanos warehouse for some period of years.

A question to the forum....what is the latest datecode of REVISADO you have if any?

My Dad showed these to a good friend of his. Someone who knows a lot about cubans and who I trust in his opinion 100%. He said the source I got them from is legit and there is nothing wrong with the cigars. They must have just been disturbed from the long transit and the double warranty seal freaked me out a bit so my opinion on the taste was somewhat biased.

I'm going to give them 30-60 days rest and then try them again.

Sorry Matt for jumping in on your thread. I didn't want to start a new one and it is sort of related.

It is the Revisado, I would like to learn more about.

So here is the bottom of a box of Bolivar Corona Extras.

Note the price in CUCs isn't much different to Czar's current price:-(

image4870.jpg

The original looks like a 2001 date

image4871.jpg

And the Revisado'd date looks like 10/04:

image4872.jpg

So am I right on dates and what does it mean please?

Mel39 (sorry for color cast-I was playing)
