Colt45 Posted April 26, 2007 Posted April 26, 2007 So far, I've found '06 Montecristo No.5s (and No.4s as well) to be fairly full bodied. But, I think it could be more of a youthful kick. I expect that they'll smooth/mellow out with time. Thanks for the review!
Professor Twain Posted April 26, 2007 Posted April 26, 2007 Thanks for the reviews. I am stocking up on smaller sized cigars because so often I don't have the time to give a larger cigar the time it deserves. These are two of my favorites. I agree that the Monte has surprising strength and flavor for a little cigar. Do you take requests? I suggest you add a review of the Bolivar Tubo #3. I have two boxes in my Czarador (my name for the online cigar locker) that I haven't tasted from, I'm eager to know what they are like. Previous Boli Tubo #3s that I have had (with some age) have been very powerful and flavorful.
Freefallguy Posted April 26, 2007 Posted April 26, 2007 Very nice review Rob, I'll sample the Monte's on my next order. As always, excellent photos!
El Presidente Posted November 15, 2008 Author Posted November 15, 2008 Catching up on a few reviews. I can't say I am feeling 100% after a few lunches and dinners with early morning finishes. Looking in the humidor this morning I felt like a few half corona's and so selected a Partagas Short MGT AUG 06 Vs a Montecristo No 5 REO MAR06. Lets start with the Partagas Short MGT AUG 06 Good looking cigar without being the prettiest cigar I have seen. Wrapper feels a touch on the dry side although there are some oil patches. Construction feels good with a straight tobacco aroma at cold. Foot nice and open. Cerrated the cap, nice draw, taste of Vuelta abajo toasted tobacco on the lips. Torched the foot and immediately the Partagas asserted itself. Medium bodied, touch of white pepper spice, dark roast coffee notes. My initial impressions were very good if not outstanding. I have commented previously about the quality variances we have seen in the Partagas Short and this was certainly a return to form....with some improvement required. The ash is good but flaky...not that I have ever really cared. Aroma is pure partagas....sweet paprika spice and golden toasted tobacco. Past the halfway point the cigar became complacent and stuck in a shortbread dunked in coffee flavour profile. Still a great mid morning cigar. Absolutely no bitterness to speak of, still medium bodied. Very good, honest Partagas Short. It did not blow my mind away as others have but it also did not disappoint. 87/100 4/6 Smokerings Montecristo No 5 REO MAR 06 The last 12 months have been a great period for the Montecristo Number 5. I have had some absolute crackers. Selected this example from an open box. Good looking cigar. Milk coffee smell at cold. Construction is excellent. Cerrated the cap and the draw was absolutely perfect. Sponge cake and tobacco taste on the lips. Lit the foot and immediately there was cream and milk coffee within a mid body format. Luscious milk coffee....classic Montecristo. Little spice through the nose, just sheer relaxation, poise and class. More cream, latte coffee and a hint...very small hint of unsweetened orange marmalade which you buy from farmers markets Very much enjoying this cigar and it is consistent with what we have found with the Montecristo No 5 since early 2006. Picture the best Partagas Short and San Cristobal El Principe you have ever had and then imagine a mix of the two. It is the Goldilocks of the half corona world. Not too strong, Not too light.....just right. Milk coffee becoming fuller in flavour as I near the end. It has moved from a Latte to a strong flat white. A little more presence on the palate and through the nose with some white pepper stamping its presense. Simply gorgeous. 90/100 5/6 Smokerings.
