Mark Twain Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 Hoyo Du Prince ‘98 My very first vitola from the Hoyo brand just happened to come from a cab made in 1998.:-P What a treat. I was worried when I first cracked the cab and noticed just how fugly the cigars looked. Many cigars on the top row had numerous spots of dark green tobacco that didn’t age. Luckily for me this didn’t seem to affect the smoking experience. I smelled spice coming off the foot of the cigar along with a rich smell of Cuban tobacco. I used my Xikar cutter to just score the head and flip the cap off to find a little divot staring at me. The cigar light easily and drew evenly throughout the smoke. The initial taste was a very full-bodied creaminess with a core of roasted coffee. The smoke was surprisingly thick and strong for such a small cigar. The ash is layered with ribs. Just beautiful consistency. I noticed some wonderful complexity twenty minutes into the cigar. The core of roasted coffee began a delicate, yet noticeable shift toward a heavy soil with undertones of leather left on the finish. The creaminess never seemed to fade, even as the cigar shifted to a more full-bodied smoke toward the end. I found this to be the most enjoyable Petit Corona, sorry. . . Almuerzo, that I’ve smoked to date. Simply a delight. I can only wonder why they were discontinued.:crying:
Professor Twain Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 Great review. I have some 98s as well. I have only smoked one and it was great, I didn't pay close enough attention to remark on details but mine was great as well. I don't think these are discontinued, maybe just some box sizes. Rob recently posted a rave review of an 06 box and I bought one!
jaylax5 Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 MT...excellent review...this makes it very difficult for me to wait for my '98s.
