Ya know, I thought I had beer figured out. Figured I had pretty much crossed most bridges. Holy Sh!t was I wrong!

At a wine tasting event I got introduced to Gulden Draak. When I saw it poured I cringed a little. I have not had great experience with darker beers. I really have not found one that makes me want to write home to Mama. Lifting the glass I thought I was in for a taste that was going to be very bitter with a finish that I did not want hanging around with me. After taking the first drink I was introduced to a new level of barley bliss.

This Belgian ale or barley wine weighs in at a powerful 10.5% alcohol. You can only tell after the first drink and after the last one. :-P It is very smooth with a prominant caramel sweetness and leaves a light carbonation on the tongue when drinking.

Since trying this fine brew I have started dipping into Trappist beers(Chimay), triple filtered ales and am looking for the beyond. I have started a new journey my friends. I am now on a path to staggering enlightenment.

Slick, this is what initially caight my eye, that you tried it at a wine tasting.

Do they consider it an ale, or a barley "wine"?

Remember, too much of a good thing.......... is still a good thing.

It was not offered as part of the wine tasting, it was what I started drinking after the wine was gone. :-D

It is referred to as a barley wine on the Draak website.
