On the advice of counsel, I must exercise my 5th Amendment privilage and emphatically, categorically, unequivicably deny any recollections of any such alleged activities.

» Re: settlements for allegations of Cuban embargo violations

This one stumps me slightly.

All Treasury and its enforcement agencies need to do is spend a couple of hundred dollars on Cigar Aficionado back copies and off the top of my head they could levy fines and/or arrest:

Bill Clinton

Arnold Swartzenegger

Michael Jordan

Bill Murray

William Shatner

Morgan Freeman

Most of Las Vegas Celebs

etc etc etc.

While they are at it, they could seize control of Altadis USA as it owns 50% of Habanos s.a through its alligned companies.

The way I see it, the US embargo may be in is its final stages. With Fidel unlikely to see the end of 2007, a new balance in the US administration, a basketcase economy in Cuba with a younger administration (excluding Raul) which behind the scenes is making the right noises (the first time in 49 years), UN pressure for the embargo to be modified/dropped and a weakening US economy.

Forward thinking/dreaming:

Unless the Dems screw up big time, Florida will not be such a big issue in the next election. Fidel will be dead or as good as. There will be some behind the scenes government to government negotiations, trade lobbies will have increased their voice and cracks will certainly appear.

I can also see as a result of the Iraq dilemma ( let's face it folks...it is all over when 100 + ministry of the interior staff are kidnapped in central Baghdad at 9am in the morning using 60 odd trucks ) that there may indeed be different approach taken by current and future US administrations in the way they deal with problem child nations (that is not a criticism, just a political reality).

Keep the discussion on this topic general.

Nice Rob. I though the same. Yeah, go after Joe Schmo, but we'll just turn our backs on that video of Billy Clinton entering Casa del Oro in NZ, buying and smoking a Cuban cigar. Love YouTube.

I certainly agree with the above, but at it's most basic, right or wrong, if a person

knowingly breaks regulations, they need to be ready to suffer the consequences.
