Yesterday\'s Catch: Spotted SeaTrout

Rob, per our email about me being nothing more than a "fishing bragger" because I never seem to remember a camera, here is my catch from yesterday. :-D

The monster Trout, also known 'round these parts as a Gator Trout, was 26" and 10 lbs., the smaller was 20".

Both caught on live finger mullet in the flats.

Also had a nice Flounder, but had already filleted the sucker when I remembered to take the picture.:-|

I love seatrout - I've only ever caught them using shrimp. Can you buy the

I catch them myself. They are schooling really nice right now. Average size is about 3". I use a 6' cast net and a 4' when Im in a confined creek or flat. Nothing better than catching the bait, then catching a few days worth of dinner;-)

Oh, right now in St Aug, the shrimp are running as well. A few casts of the net in the deeper water usually yields a few dozen if your lucky and know where to look.

I prefer using live finger mullet to shrimp because you tend to catch alot of **** fish on the shrimp..as well as some really nice stuff. If something hits a 3" finger mullet, you can almost be sure its a great fish.

They damn sure do. And the final kick in the balls is when you catch one of the bastards, they always end up stickin' you with those damn spiny pin dorsal fins while trying to get them off the hook.

Yeah, unfortunately, I've had that pleasure as well! I always wanted to hook

one through the lip and toss it back out, but I figured that where I was fishing,

there was nothing big enough to take one.

Can you use them for bait out in open water?
