cobra Posted March 18, 2006 Posted March 18, 2006 Can anyone comment on the difference in character to a box pressed verses a cabinet cigar. Doesn't a roller just grab another 25 of the same stock off the table or is there some difference in quality to the stick?
JMH Posted March 18, 2006 Posted March 18, 2006 No difference in quality, they're exactly the same. Where they may differ however is in different speeds of ageing due to different packaging.

How true that is today is hard to tell because IMO almost all of the cigars coming out of Cuba recently are very nice looking. There have been a few debates on whether or not the cabinet cigars are better quality or even a different blend but both sides have presented valid arguments on that and there is no way to tell which is a fact with any certainty. Personally, I prefer cabinet selections because I like that the cigars a truly 'round' as opposed to 'rectangular'.
Loki Posted March 18, 2006 Posted March 18, 2006 I'm always torn on this one. I think that the quality is the same. Sometimes it comes down to what fits in my cabinet humidor better? It seems to me that either strictly dress boxes or strictly cabs fit better, even though I have a combonation of both. My humidor seems more like the game Jenga everyday.

I'm with Todd on really liking the roundness of a cabinet cigar, seems like a small thing...but I'm weird that way:-D

Also, there seems to be a certain charm in the unbanded versions vs the newer banded cab selections. Just psychological I guess, but in this hobby, perception counts for a lot I feel.

For the Cabinet vs. Dress Box question the answer should always be PREFERENCE, PREFERENCE, PREFERENCE... I believe there are 3 things that will determine which is the one for you... 1. PRICE - a 50 cabinet is more expensive than a 25 dress box... 2. AGING - a 50 cabinet requires more time to age because of the more limited air circulation than a 25 dress box which is not as airtight... Smokes for the longterm (50 cabinet) or smokes for the shorter term (25 dress box) 3. SHAPE OF THE VITOLA - a 50 cabinet vitola is round while a dress box has a slight box press... If you like to roll the vitola between your fingers with a round feel and no edges then the 50 cabs are for you... If you like the edgy feel then the dress boxes are more to your liking.... From my experience, I do not believe the blends are different... I do believe that they age differently and that is in most cases why people seem to believe that the blends are not the same... My preference for coronas and lonsdales has always been the cabinets while for belicosos I like the dress boxes... To each his own...

What I heard is that the Cab 50's are first selection (Colour wise) but the smokes are still the same for cab 25'5 and pressed boxes.....
